Deserves more than one comment, shirley. Great, great singer, and apparently one of the good guys too. His second solo album is definitely worth a listen. There was a telling moment in the Eagles doc where Glenn Frey was berating him for his pre-gig terror at not being able to reach the high note in Take It To The Limit. Fascinating warts-and-all film of a great band (of mostly warts, except for Tim). For many, his performance of that song defines the Eagles, and in a good way.
Yep he was the one member of the Eagles who seemed like a ‘good guy’ – a great voice and that voice certainly played a big part in the Eagle’s success.
I first became aware of him on Rick Nelson’s album ‘Rudy the 5th’ and then Poco.
Yebbut I don’t his career came down to one note, and I doubt he did. He had a successful career before he hit That Note. Sang with arguably the biggest band in the U.S., and before that did pretty well in Poco. Had a solo career. Made millions of people happy, and a few million bucks, before and after he hit That Note, and he couldn’t have done that without the song to lift him up to it.
‘Certain Kind Of Fool’ from Desperado was a good showcase for RM, as seen 13 minutes into this clip from their BBC recording in ’73. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq7XxwIsgbU

Bob Lefsetz put out a fine tribute to the man early this morning, UK time:

Er – @H.P. Saucecraft – that high note story is about Timothy B Schmidt non? You do refer to Tim in your post – just checking…
Junior Wells says
Meisner was the man. Maybe Schmidt afterwards but it was Meisner at the start.

I don’t know what I’m on about. Basically.

Read a similar story about GF berating RM for the same reason in the latter’s Times obit

He was in an interesting ‘sixties group before that – The Poor. PM if interested.

I have binned off my Eagles CDs to the chazza – but I continue to retain my Poco collection.
RIP Mr Meisner…

Imagine your whole career coming down to one note on one song.

What a mean-spirited comment.

I was actually empathising With the Meismeister

What a song it is though.
Did he write anything else as good? My Eagles knowledge is patchy at best
H.P. Saucecraft says
He co-wrote it with Henley & Frey. What an enjoyable creative partnership that must have been.
Jaygee says
After Leadon and Meisner left they should have changed the name of the band
to the Egos

Have you seen the doc? It’s really gripping, even for a non-fan.
Jaygee says
I did indeed. Even saw the band once (they were supporting Elton J at Wembley on Midsummer’s day 1975).. Never really cared for them after OTB

“Is it true” from “On the Border” and “Try and love again” from “Hotel California” are both very good.
