Sir Paul has announced a new ‘career-spanning’ compilation, due out in June, entitled “Pure McCartney”. There was some speculation a few days ago after Sir Paul released snippets of some remixes of ‘Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five’ that a remix project was in the offing. However, it seems that it was just a precursor to the compilation announcement (neither remix appears on any of the compilation variants, by the way).
The full 4 CD tracklisting is listed in the article. FWIW, I think it looks pretty good, and if I’m feeling flush come June, I may put my hand in my pocket for this one. Added bonus – no ‘C Moon’.

Oh, and I love the picture they used for the cover.
4CD version is the more comprehensive (obviously) and is on the list of “things to put on my shelf”.
Intersting to see tracks from recent solo album New inserted with McCartney and Ram material.
Will it work?
Don’t know – I prefer a compilation to have a chronology feel to it, so the idea of 21st Century Macca beween 1970s Macca doesn’t “feel” right (oh yeah, like he cares what I think).
This is only the 4th (official) compilation released, and looks to be the most thought about.
Wings Greatest was to 1978, and primarily Wings (as it would be), All The Best went to 1987, Winspan went no further than 1984. And all of these dealt with the Hits
I own all of the above, but I have no difficulty justifying the purchase of this one too.
nothing from Flowers in the Dirt, far as i can tell…which is a dang shame!
Think I may have answered your question!
You have. It’s a silly reason if it’s the case though. FITD had some great singles which seem to be getting airbrushed rather needlessly.
And yeah. I’ll buy it too.
As others have pointed out the press blurb is all “oh y’know just something that will be fun to play in the car” but he has left off anything from ‘Flowers In The Dirt’ which just happens to be the next album in line to get the deluxe remastering box treatment
Of course I’ll be buying it, its McCartney, shurrup
I was rather hoping it was going to be Back To The Egg, but oh well…
It’s already been grumbled at SuperDeluxeEdition that the idea of a 2CD best-of is fine, if casual punters are the market, but why would a ‘casual’ punter want a 4CD set and why would a ‘diehard’ want a 4CD set with nothing new or rare on it. Fair questions. Still, as Rigid notes above, like Macca could care less 🙂
I think there’s a market in between casual and fanatic. I would consider it, for example. I’m a beatles nut, but I find all their solo output patchy, but I would go for a well curated anthology like this.
Fair enough, Arthur – though are you aware the 4CD version is £34.99, even on amazon? Surely that’s not slightly-more-than-casual-buyer money? Too rich for me – even after the thread on the AW about the 9-disc Miles Davis mono box set coming down to £20 I still took two weeks to convince myself.
…or you could go for the vinyl version at £87(!)
With only half the tracks!
Re: “the 9-disc Miles Davis mono box set coming down to £20”
Yes, I’m still considering that, mainly because I have almost all the albums in standard stereo versions. But I must admit I’m tempted by the good-value mono box. I haven’t regretted buying some of the Beatles albums on mono vinyl. They’re an absolute revelation.
Up to £32 on Amazon this morning I’m afraid.
£35.59 now 🙁
Seems there is a 2CD version for the casual, but the timings a bit odd as well. Apart this kind of collection usually being a Xmas market thing, June this year will put it up against the Euros. If they’d waited a year, it’d be his 75th birthday.
I like C Moon
Yes Ruff-d, don’t be such an L7.
There would be room for C Moon if they took off Ebony And Ivory…
Interestingly, ‘Pure McCartney’ was also the title of a live CD/DVD by Danish singer/songwriter Tim Christiansen, along with Mike Viola and Tracy Bonham, which was an excellent live run-through of ‘Ram’ plus some Macca classics at the end.
My stance on C-Moon remains unwavering…
I noticed that too, Ruffster. I wonder will Tim C pick up a few extra sales (in error or otherwise) as a result? He couldn’t ask for better publicity! I Googled ‘Pure McCartney’ and his album was the first to appear!
That’s exactly why I was listening to it yesterday! It’s very well done, well worth checking out.
For what it’s worth, I made a Spotify playlist of over 35 songs that are not on the compilation, because it’s the right thing to do.
Track 28 – GAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
I wanted to add Wonderful Christmastime, but it’s a bit early for that.
Big up for Old Siam Sir. Together with Monkberry Moon Delight it’s just about my fave post Fabs Macca vocal performance.
And I’m glad to see my least favourite Macca song of all, the execrable Famous Groupies is nowhere to be seen on anyone’s playlist.
Tune-wise, it’s fairly neutral, but those lyrics! And the funny voices!
I dislike it so much I started a thread to that effect on the old blog.
this looks a lot like my ‘but they forgot……..’ list. But even this doesn’t include
this
or this

or Somedays!!!!!
I could go on. But I won’t. But what were they thinking?
I tried to put Flying To My Home on the list, but it’s not on Spotify *sad emoticon*.
Here’s another one – Bluebird:

What, no ‘That Day Is Done’? OK its not a patch on EC & Fairfiled Fours version but it’s better than dull Figure Of Eight

The track listing looks great, even though any half-decent Macca fan will already have all the tracks several times over (my copy of Wingspan with the 3D sleeve is still sealed for example).
But I do like the look of this one. Heart Of The Country from Ram is a nice touch for track #2.
I love a bit of scat, me (oo-er!)
Also, good for Macca for throwing a giant “fuck off” to his critics and including ‘We All Stand Together’ on the 4 disc set.
Agreed. I hate the way it’s now become accepted fact (and extremely lazy thinking) that The Frog Song is crap without looking at the context at all.
If I may digress for a moment. There was a great Beatles-related line on Coronation Street this week.
They were talking about someone’s girlfriend sticking her nose into some business deal or other that was none of her concern. Gail pipes up with “Well, Yoko Ono had nothing to do with the Beatles, but it didn’t stop her sticking her oar in, did it?”
The young lass working behind the bar looks confused and says “Who?”
Classic Corrie!
Another nod of respect to The Frog Chorus. I’ve always thought it was beautiful.
Is ‘Veronica’ on it? I like that one.

This is much better but I suppose it’s really an Elvis song that Paul had nothing to do with so please ignore my previous post.
No room for “Riding to Vanity Fair”?
I like that song.
A little late to the party but here’s radio.com’s list of songs that should have been included but weren’t. It’s a strange list. Can’t say I’m a fan.
