New album came out last Friday. I haven’t played it yet. I haven’t really given the previous one the required 6 plays.

I know what you mean but they’re still a great live act. I took my son to see them about 5 years ago (he wasn’t keen, fiddles and stuff not being cool when you’re 14) and he came out a convert. Possibly the start of him broadening his musical horizons.

I’ve been a Waterboys fan from the days of ‘A Girl Called Johnny’. I don’t really go to gigs that much but I always turn up for them if they’re in Cardiff and they are never a disappointment. I even enjoyed Mike’s solo shows ten years or so ago (or longer??). But…
…I don’t like the new album much. I’m not overly enamoured of his spoken word efforts and- although it’s part of the W/Boys package- I do get weary of the ‘spiritual’ bollocks sometimes.

Last saw em at Blenheim, as support to EC. Both were featuring girly singers for the first time. Strange how that worked for the Waterboys and detracted for Costello. O, sure, of course Waterboys were brill, even if caution required for the newer stuff he’s putting out quicker than, “Ba’ Heid’ Van Morrison is these days.

I was a fan, and had a mutual Twitter follow with him. Pleasant enough at first in private and in public, but after 2016 he he descended into the prime example of an arrogant sneering cliched intolerant ranting ultra left bollocks, and a man that actually tweeted ‘Hilary is the most honest woman in politics’ (sic). So much for his vaunted spirituality, let alone political intellect.

Still not sure about the album as a whole, but this is a cracker. Can’t imagine who it’s about …

I think Soul Singer is exceptional. The album as a whole requires repeat listening but is definitely growing on me . This current line up is without doubt his best live band and I dont recall him spouting any ‘lefty bollox’ the last couple of times I have seen him.
