It’s a cracking read – you really can hear his voice throughout – as long as you don’t approach it with a view to getting the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. In a sense that doesn’t matter, because he’s telling a story, his own story – other versions of parts of that story are also available elsewhere.
I read it some years ago and enjoyed it – my main remembrance is how he has nothing but good things to say about Pete Waterman, while being very frosty towards John Peel, contrary sod…
He said of the couple of times he met Peel that he made it clear that he didnt feel he owed the DJ anything special and Peel was fine with that, Didn’t stop him being a fan of the band.
Having been burnt by artists like Bolan and Bowie before I think John knew that was the best place to be
3 quid paperback in FOPP at the mo’ – in the 2 for a fiver thing – stacks of copies by the tills. I picked one up on Monday, and it is a hoot. Everyone and everything gets a lashing.
Just a tip to place links in the appropriate box when starting a thread. Makes it possible to do a direct click on it, rather than copy and pasting in another window.
Since his death many support bands and fellow artists have said how kind he was towards them, making sure they got paid a decent cut and had plenty of sound check time. Last time I saw The Fall the support band mentioned that Mark said they could play a longer set but they hadn’t the material to fill it.
My favourite was Mat Osman (brother of Richard) who said the same about Suede’s time supporting The Fall. On way home from a show they listened to Mark being interviewed on the radio and asked about the current crop of bands saying they had been influenced by The Fall.
‘Such as?’ asked Mark
‘Well, Suede for example’
Mr Smith took a perfectly timed beat
‘Never eard of em’
The deramdaze lobe of my brain glows with nostalgia for a time when it was Richard Osman (brother of Mat) and Frank Lampard was a grizzled veteran with a beard, while the half of the “will they/ won’t they” RossRachelNilesDaphne Moonlighting pair-up-we-were-rooting-for that wasn’t Steven Gerrard was called Frank Lampard Junior..

He didn’t like Fall fans, the middle class or anybody from the BBC… what chance did Peel have?
slotbadger says
He did like Leonard Rossiter, Lindsay Anderson, Damien Hirst, Bargain Booze in Prestwich, the Tories, Leigh Bowery, Irvine Welsh and Mel C.
