My friend Emma has made a film about Bill Frisell
The link shows upcoming screenings – eg London Sun 5 November, 3pm at the Curzon Cinema in Soho.
I haven’t seen it myself but I did contribute to the crowdfunding campaign, and in due course will get a dvd. Apparently Bill is very chuffed with it.
And here’s Bill’s first ever recording – on the absolutely brilliant Amarcord Nino Rota – a gorgeous album of Fellini film music produced by Hal Wilner.

And another side of Bill (he has many sides) – a trio album with the great Jim Keltner on drums

Remarkable guitarist & a remarkable man. i’ll definitely watch this.
His album with Thomas Morgan, Small Town, recorded live at the Village Vanguard & released this year is an absolute beauty & illustrates he is still performing with incredible quality.

I love the eerie, off-centre, slightly discordant yet transcendent calm of his music and the diverse choice of themes which has led to a varied and rewarding back catalogue. Personal favourites would be the Power Tools – Strange Meeting album, and ‘The Willies’ – quite different styles, but both beautiful.
He’s one of those musicians who has managed to be quietly successful without being famous, such that it was a delight to discover him and not feel the world and its spouse have already determined the authoritative opinion on him.
Is this the film, @Mousey? It looks like it’s a delight in itself:

Yep that’s it

What about that album with Ginger Baker? Love the way he channels Clapton on the last track, the one with the spoken bit about East Timor.

like Ry Cooder he seems capable of working with just about anybody and bringing something fresh to the party but in a way that is completely complementary to and in sympathy with the other artists rather than taking over. Two of my favourite pieces of work by him are the Intercontinentals album which is just stunningly beautiful and which I first heard a track from on Late Junction some years ago and just had to get it; and Lucinda Williams’ last album The Ghosts of Highway 20. Greg Leisz is on both records as well. Here’s a link to an interview he did some time ago about the former album

Re: the Amarcord Nina Rota CD on Hannibal by Hal Wilner.
Will you please not do this? Kindly stop posting effulgent recommendations for CDs that can only be had by selling a hundred metric tonnes of Unobtainium to North Korea or to Iran, or by selling ones nubile nieces into White Slavery in the Middle East, risking imminent retribution from some hard bloke like Liam Neeson.
Tell your bloody friend Emma to bloody tell bloody Bill Frisell to get the bloody thing released again for a proper bloody price and maybe we can all enjoy listening to it properly.
Tchoh!

LOL! There’s plenty on eBay at reasonable prices. Including this LP – grab it before I do!

I’m not buying vinyl from the antipodes. Not only will it likely be made from recycled tyres off dead Holdens, but it will take a month to arrive, battered and dented by countless culturally challenged intermediaries, and one will have fretted for its safety the while. Frightful idea.

Dubious-looking stains and smelling of Koala piss too.

Great man…I’ve always been fond of his Tiny Desk Concert of Lennon songs. Lovely meditative stuff.

DuCool and I were lucky enough to see a live show of Frisell’s Great Flood. The combination of music and poignant images was breath-taking.
It’s available on DVD.
