A couple of years ago, I was tipped off about an Oxford-based prog band called Sanguine Hum. I bought the two albums then available, and thought they were pretty good, though unable to resist the usual “not as good as those golden-age prog bands” caveat. However, Sanguine Hum have recently released their third album, and it’s a corker. Whether you’re a prog fan from those far off days of the early 70s, or a nu-prog youngster, I strongly urge you to check out their double-CD behemoth, “Now We Have Light”. Not just a prog album, but a prog CONCEPT album, by golly! I really didn’t think I’d ever hear another prog album as dazzlingly original as this one. Here’s a taster – if you like it, I assure you it’s all just as good as this.

They’ve been championed by Steve ‘interesting’ Davis, who has form as a prog-lover. I remember a few years back a radio show he did and devoted an entire programme to Sanguine Hum and other offshoots of the two main guys from the band. All the stuff he played was terrific – classic prog riffs, very melodic with flashes of Zappa and Rundgren. Will check this out.
I love prog but that was awful
Hi Wheaty – whilst prog’s a broad church, and it may just be that this band’s wavelength is different to yours, I realise that maybe this instrumental section from towards the end of the album might not be the most representative for a stand-alone sample. So try this one, from earlier in the album, which I think does work better as a stand-alone track. If this one doesn’t float your boat either, well no harm done, just another example of different strokes. Would be interested to know if this one fares better with you!
That I enjoyed more, reminded me of Caravan.
I guess the vocals helped.
