Its T
In 2006 I went off to Real Groovy in Auckland to get ‘Whatever people say I am, thats what I’m not’ on release day in NZ Aotearoa Feb 2006. I got told it isn’t available til next day. I was getting it for my daughters birthday so I chanced ‘The Greatest’ by Cat Power, instead . This became father/daughter epiphany. We saw her couple years later at a memorable gig at The Power Station. She subsequently got me into The Mountain Goats who we saw at The Kings Arms. We listening to that Arctic Monkeys record now & really thinking its great but not as good as Cat Power.

I suspect that Cat Power has more than a few fans here. Her voice has a marvelous intimacy and vulnerability.

The Greatest was performed with most of Al Greens backing band, I seem to recall.
Her covers albums are exceptional.

The Greatest is actually her greatest album. However as Retro said her covers albums are also very good indeed. Check out her version of the Stones Satisfaction. The song is completely deconstructed but it is a phenomenal version.
I think that may have been a Blueprint for the current TV ad fad of female singers performing slowed down covers of well known songs. When Cat does it there is a discernible frisson. These copyists haven’t really grasped it.

Cat’s covers are wonderful. And her more up tempo songs, like Cherokee here, are worth a listen too. She directed the video herself. Oh dear!
Norway’s Susanna (Wallumrod and the Magic Orchestra) is another singer who knows how to slow a song down and reduce it to its bare bones very effectively. From Joy Division to Dolly Parton.
