What does it sound like?:
Older readers (*snork*) may remember mystery group The Dukes Of Stratosphear, whose two albums from, er, whenever, effortlessly evoked Swingin’ Sixties UK psychedelia without ever descending into pastiche. Whatever happened to them, you ask? Well, pop fans, I can reveal that the latest waxing from Professor & The Madman is perhaps their equal, and I am pleasantly surprise. The cover, of course, slyly references Andy Warhol’s iconic 3D sleeve for Sgt. Pepper And The Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the alert listener – probably not you, then – will have fun spotting the many musical references to that fabulous decade hidden oh-so-cleverly within the groove! Tunes a-plenty; toetappers, stomping beat numbers, haunting balladry, and of course the mind-bending effects made possible by the latest studio technology!
The music world is abuzz with rumours that Professor & The Madman are in fact top pop stars wearing false walrus mustaches and wild hipster trousers! Could they be our old friends The Dukes Of Stratosphear??? I’m not tellin’!
What does it all *mean*?
It means home taping didn’t in fact kill music, apparently.
Goes well with…
A bag of mixed jubes from Woolies, a Vimto, and the back seat of a Cortina.
Release Date:
Round about now, I’d have thought.
Might suit people who like…
Groovy sounds for now people.

Great review! More content like this, please!
MODS – is there any way of making the above comment look like it came from someone else? THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION IN THIS MATTER.

Does this go down well after smoking a banana peel bifta? Asking for a friend.

No really actually though but this is a stonking good long-playing LP record. Hats off to the talented lads “in the band”! I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more from them!
??
Back to bananas:
“Global tropicalia” it says here. I like it.
Fun Fact: he changed the spelling of his name because he’d get bottled off stage when the audience realised he wasn’t the celebrated Irish comedian Dave Allen they’d paid good money to see.
If Eric Bana/Nana Mouskouri had a love child, I like to think they would make good use of their names.
Chris Straits?
Banana mous?
I’d ban an association between the two of them.
👏
“E-lec-trickle banana …” The Celtic Dylan’s paean to personal vibrators.
The Pretty Things recorded library music as the Electric Banana, so here’s the Electric Banana Band!
Happy Japanese Hammond organ trio. Dressed in yellow!
Authentically groovetastic.
(Where’s Kaisfatdad when you need him? FFS?)
Can’t believe we got his far with nobody posting this:
“2026 who’s still listening to this masterpiece” says internet person.

Man – Banannas
Can’t believe we got this far yadda yadda.
Can’t believe….oh, you know the rest….
They don’t make them like this anymore.
I’m unhappy with the inappropriate tone of mockery in the above clip. Timeless classics should be treated with respect.
Hopefully this isn’t the one that Hubes posted above…
It is
Dang nab it!

Mine was the remastered album version so not a slip up on your part.

The main problem with Little Feat is that they make everything else sound rubbish.
True.
All the Bananas:
I am confuse.
You’re right about the album, it’s a little cracker.
It’s great, ain’t it?
Time flies like the wind…
Maybe no-one else knows, but
….fruit flies like a banana.
Song posted above but this is surely the definitive version!?!
Too loud man….
I thought this a hoax, but it seems an actual !
Aside from the banana bollocks I’ve. learned a bit about the prof & his sidekicks and ordered an album by someone.
You certainly will not regret ordering an album by someone.
Banana’s don’t have bollocks. You may be getting them confused with plums.

Listening to the album possibly Professor and the Madman were in on the zeitgeist. From Brand New World.
“Polka-dot trees, blue tangerines
Say good morning to the brand new world
Purple bananas, flavorless tea
Say good morning to the brand new world
Say good morning to the brand new world
And we’re in a race to make a safe place for the boys and girls
Say good mornin’ to the brand new world!”
Apologies @Pyramid but more banana bollocks Musa sapientum
I can hear someone railing against this already.

Well I’ll be damned (or 50% damned anyway), that is a fine listen
It has been acclaimed as an “album of the year” by none other than me. High praise indeed.
Have to say that this is a most entertaining thread – well played, chaps!
Nine, wupes, eight to go before I step up to receive my hamper in a hail of phlegm and bottles of piss.
Is it too late to bring up Bananas with Woody Allen?
Probably
Please don’t bring up bananas in this thread.
Apologies are plantains OK?
No
I was lucky enough to pick up a copy of their previous akcbum, Séance, at the Eel Market yesterday. The cover promises a sort of New Wave punk-a-billy, but it’s more power-prog. A blended suite of songs about death and the afterlife an’ that, innit. Only played it once but look forward to “getting into it” as the kids are saying!
Cued it up on the Consolette as first play o’ th’ day! If you like Dream World (AND WHO COULD NOT EH? EH?) this is very likely to press much the same pleasure buttons. Upbeat, complex/simple, earworm tuneage, extremely well played. I reckon the cover put a lot of people off, the few that got to see it. And it’s, blimey, a concept album about dyin’ an’ that. Maybe a marketing mis-step? Purchase with confidence.
Have a free comment (and no mention at all of Kevin Ayers)…
I expect that a banana filled hamper is on its way to you as I type. Probably won’t be very nice by the time you get it.
I’d like to thank everyone working “behind the scenes” who’ve helped in their way to make this thread the success it is! *removes mic from stand, moves to edge of stage for intimate effect* Y’know, creating – and curating! – a Hamper Thread isn’t just the work of the “OP”, no matter how handsome and talented he may be! No, it’s this whole, like, swarm of anonymous “little people” out there adding their little comments as best they can! *muttering from audience* I think we have some of them here tonight *shields eyes from spot* Is that Lodestone of Wrongness out there? How’d you get in, fella?” *some booing from audience* Ha ha! Only joking! *very audible FUCK YOU!* Ha ha! You too fella! *transmission lost, return to studio*
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an Afterworder in want of a hamper must discount his own posts..

What a thoroughly enjoyable thread. Great work, H.P. It got me thinking about the word for banana in other languages.
In most European languages, the word is very similar to banana.
The most striking exceptions are the Spanish plátano and the Turkish muz.
Here’s a catchy Spanish banana earworm.
And a rocking good Turkish song about bananas!
Thanks for your late entry, KFD, but I’m afraid everyone’s gone home.
