I am all in favour of it and of reflecting the multi cultural society that we live in these days. Now this doesn’t bother me too much, but I sometimes find that things are shoehorned into films/TV shows rather a lot these days.
I was watching “Last Christmas” with my daughter tis weekend (not a classic if you haven’t seen it), but it was almost hilarious how many boxes appeared to be ticked as we worked out way through. Our main character’s boss was Chinese (or at least spoke Mandarin), her Asian best friend was in a relationship with a black guy, later we learnt of a gay relationship which was naturally multi racial and there was also a transgender character in there. I didn’t notice any Scots or Welsh, oh and main family was Eastern European
Now all of this could happen in real life (if not the plot of the film), but it strikes of just going through a checklist to include everything which could undermine the positive representations that the film wants to portray. Preferable to an all white “Notting Hill” from the dreaded Richard Curtis but just as unrealistic
Am I being over curmudgeonly about this?
