‘Like A Rolling Stone’ by The Rolling Stones.
You don’t have to do this – do you know who you are?
From the 60s, and a bit obscure, The Pretty Things covering The Kinks’ ‘House In The Country’ was a very strange decision, and sealed their commercial fate.
Ditto The Marmalade with ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’…..their early 45s are great, and in their case this cover destroyed all credibility.
I’d love them to do another covers album. It would be much better than a bunch of rehashed tunes masquerading as originals. And, why not cover the song after which they were named?
Can’t be arsed to google it, but there was a version of Baker Street in the top 20 in the 90s, where they didn’t even get the chords right. Appalling shite.
Wow, I’d forgotten about that.
I saw them perform it twice (before the game and at half-time) at a Man. City v. QPR match, it was the first Monday night game in the first ‘Premier League’ season, so I think it must have been 1992.
Someone did an amazingly bad version of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ around the same time.
That makes me think of a really low quality cover of Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime that was remixed with trendy at the time Ibiza doof doof doofs and wooh! Yeahs! It was on TOTP with gyrating dancers and “hands in the air” type gestures. Just when I was thinking that the at the Korgis are making a bit of money – the Korgis vocalist appears for the singing bit – looking a bit embarrassed.
I collect covers of this song because it means that James Warren can afford to revive Stackridge. They are doing their final tour this year and will then carry on as the Korgis. https://youtu.be/xklpwQa0VLc
Madonna’s American Pie. Being charitable I suppose she could have come up with her own interpretation of the lyric, but it’s more likely she was just singing a bunch of syllables like a tourist learning a few phrases phonetically.
I won’t give them the oxygen of bandwith by posting a YouTube clip here, but you *really* don’t want to expose yourself to Dollar’s take on “I Want To Hold Your Hand” (as inflicted recently by TOTP 1980).
Possibly pointless in that the original was so distinctive so improving on it was always unlikely, but I still rather like this cover of Frankie’s “Relax”. The staccato drumming is ace and Salli’s little giggle at the end is very cute.

The Stones LARS is perfect case of “nice video, shame about the song” or rather their version of it

Muddy Waters – Rollin’ Stone
Well I like it. There’s a brilliant guitar bit in the final minute of the original and I’m surprised Johnny doesn’t try it.
Anyway – this is still the version I like best :

Ditto. I don’t know the original Depeche track, and this one’s better than anything on Marr’s Healers album.
U2- Helter Skelter. I mean HONESTLY…
“Interestingly…” I used to think Helter Skelter was a Siouxsie song. When I heard the original, I found it rather slow.
Didn’t mean to put my comment as part of a sub-thread. Please pretend it’s here.

Undercover.
Also released a cover of “Never Let Her Slip Away” – that was virtually unlistenable dreck too.
Yeah, sorry for reminding us. The dark side of this place, I suppose. Never let was crap indeed, still in my head.

Candy Flip. Absolute shite.
I think you mean Candy Bloody Flip.
Going Live version – Candy Blummen’ Flip

Marc et Claude. Got to number one it did.

Very good shout Gatz. In a similar vein, Bowie’s cover of God Only Knows is as close as he’s come to being Michael Buble
Erm … is anyone going to mention Bauhaus’s ‘cover’ of Ziggy Stardust?
Pointless in that it was so close to the original? That’s always been my opinion.

Duran Duran – “911 is a joke”
I don’t even know where to start
