I do like a good playlist. I co-promote an occasional roots music night which spans blues, folk, country, bluegrass and rock ‘n’ roll of an old fashioned sort. I recently whipped together, quite unscientifically (I whizzed through the library alphabetically, picking what caught my eye) a load of songs to play between bands on the old iPod. It lasted me all the way back from France yesterday…I’ll show you mine, you show me yours!

I adore that song. In fact played it twice…sensed un peu de restlessness from the passenger seat…
Nice to see LWIII in there Twang. Like Leonard Cohen he was someone I rediscovered around 20 years ago after losing touch with him in the early 70s. Great songwriter with a fantastic voice and very, very funny, too. Think Randy Newman with a guitar (and a better voice).
“Je vais vous montrer le mien, vous me montrez le vôtre!”
How does that line go down in France?
Hi Rob,
Start with the cheap SitKoL – cd includes the original accompanying e.p. – and then, if you realise it is indeed a magnificent piece of work, by all means proceed further.
He has still got it, by the way. Took Mrs Biggles to Hyde Park in July, along with the equivalent population of our “country”, and he was absolutely fabulous!
Wrong thread, @biggles!
oops!
please see Stevie Wonder thread (or don’t).

You can’t argue with someone who has the good taste to put three Taj Mahal tracks in his playlist.
these caught my eye
Cameo – Word Up (12″ Version)
The Fifth Dimension – Stoned Soul Picnic
The Stylistics – You Make Me Feel Brand New
John Coltrane – Dakar
Another LWIII track plus a few Zappas and DONOVAN too! Nice!
Love the fact you have Willin’ in there twice. Betcha still get the lyrics in the wrong order when you sing along – I always do!
Nope my Willin’ is solid. The sharp eyed will work out this was made in November (testing the crappy laptop lid camera/mic)
https://youtu.be/tpn53esv9XY
Can I just interject here that Foxy’s singing along to Willin’ would in all likelihood be my favourite non-musical sound if I ever actually heard it.
Wish he was on BVs
I do love a list, and a LONG list is even better.
Both the Twang and MikeH variants offer much that I had forgotten about, and will be admonishing myself and rectifying (Mink De Ville and Vinegar Joe being two prime examples).
My Playlist up the M1 this morning was:
– whatever 6Music were playing
– Mrs D asking “Do we have to listen to this?”
– a brief visit to Planet Rock, “No, I don’t like that either”
– back to 6Music
– and repeat
That’s an all too familiar scenario.
Our compromise now is to have my iPod on shuffle (20,000 odd songs) but we each have the power of veto, i.e. move to the next track. So no more ‘do we have to listen to them AGAIN!’

Since the death of the cassette tape (tho’ I note tesco has ’em again on sale) and the advent of random, I confess to little need for a mixtape or playlist. Mr Random just plucks from the ether of the few songs I allow space on my comp. (I don’t rip the songs I don’t like, meaning I wonder quite why I allow the hard copy on the shelf sometimes.)
Here’s one from me that I made up 4 years ago, and liked so much I kept it (on iTunes though, not Spotify):

Sandy Nelson, Let There Be Drums!!! Terrific!!!!
Some great stuff there, KDH.
I like making playlists on Spotify and have a lot of “100 songs I love” lists for the car and random-play listenings.
But I also enjoy imposing discipline on the compilation by making themed lists containing 20, 25 or 30 tracks. Here’s one based around cover versions by female voices.
That list looks interesting @Peanuts Molloy.
Could you possibly post a Spotify link here?
(You just Right click on the name of the list and Spotify offer you the option Copy playlist link. Then you paste it in here.)
Thanks.
Hi @kaisfatdad
I’ve sent you a private message.
Playlists are where the music geek in me flourishes. I’ve created a series of 130-song lists (the number represents where I got sick of the first such list). This is the one I’m working on now–about 100 songs in. This is #27 in the series. I am asking for an intervention here…

Of on my hols, so thought I’d do a Favourite 100 Tunes Of The Year So Far playlist for the plane.
Managed to keep it down to 110 by shunting all the “dance” music (techno, drum ‘n’ bass, trance et al) off into their own list 🙂
*bursts through boarding gate, half-stumbling, half-running pursued by airport staff*
“Waaaaaaiiiit! The other list! Please post the other gnnnnnffggghhh”
*the last word is smothered as our hero is brought to the ground and soundly coshed by overzealous security staff*
Sorry @sewer-robot didn’t see this while I was away, and missed it when I came back.
Here’s the other list
(Caution, may contain Paul McCartney)
Enjoy!
Great list Mike. Amazingly I was playing the original single of Hank Ballard’s Finger Poppin’ over the weekend. Always loved the Tommy Bruce song and the two Jimmy Jones too. We only knew the Charlie Drake cover of Mr Custer at the time though.
This is a rather specialised playlist, consisting of nothing but tracks from 1960. Although I’d been plenty conscious of what was going on before that, that was the year when I really got obsessed with pop music, studying new releases in NME, listening to everything I could, hanging around in record shops playing but not buying.*
So I spent a lot of time when I should have been working, or just living, putting this list together. Some of it is desperately unhip (and sensitive souls might want to give The Heart of a Teenage Girl by Craig Douglas a miss), but it all means something (and of course some of them are stone-cold copper-bottomed classics). I hear any of these tracks and I’m Proustianly rushed back to being 13 again. And everybody knows what that’s like, even if some of the music here will make you want to gnaw your leg off.

*It was also, possibly not coincidentally, when I had my first girlfriend…
Thanks @johnny-concheroo. You’re right, of course – how could I possibly forget Charlie Drake. I was probably conferring some after-the-event London American label cred on Mr Verne.
I often wonder how Hank Ballard felt about having his entire schtick pinched by Chubby Checker.
And like his take on Aussie culture with My Boomerang Won’t Come Back, Charlie infused Mr Custer with the kind of casual racism you couldn’t get away with now.
