What does it sound like?:
Fans will be aware that the audio elements of the 50th anniversary box set from earlier in the year are now being made available individually and at a far more reasonable price. The bluray was the obvious pick of the bunch, including as it does the Dolby Atmos mix, a 5.1 surround mix and a remastered stereo mix, all wrapped up in a very nice new look sleeve. I won’t go through the songs, as we all know them off by heart by now, but suffice to say the sound lived up 100% to my already sky high expectations. The clarity and detail are absolutely stunning, and I write that as someone who‘s heard this record literally thousands of times over the past five decades. If you have the sound system that can handle these formats, then even if you don’t really need yet another copy of the album this is still an indispensable purchase, and at the price it’s an absolute steal.
What does it all *mean*?
I recall when the album was originally released in 1973 it used to be the go to record for hifi dealers to demonstrate the prowess of their equipment – this version will undoubtedly fulfil the same role for the very latest systems.
Goes well with…
Thinking was it really fifty years ago!

Classic 70s rock, iconic era defining albums.
Played it today through my new AV Amp (Marantz Cinema 50) and it sounded absolutely stunning.
All for £10*
*The Blu-ray not the Amp!
Which Dark Side of the Moon release are you going to review next week? 😉
The Dark Side of the Moon how many times can we rip the punters off mix. Complete with a sticker book and some badges.
@SteveT
You’ve lost your marbles
Have an up.
Oh and the record shop I work in has both Beatles and Bowie Monopoly sets so you might not be far off.
Post of the week.
“There is no definitive Dark Side of the Moon really. Matter of fact, you’ll want this new release.”
With Xmas fast approaching it’s surely only a matter of time before they launch a special DSOTM edition Monopoly set
How can anyone be ripped off? You know what you are buying therefore where’s the rip off?
You know what they say “You don’t have to buy it”
I got bollocked recently and quite rightly for thread crapping but there’s some around here who make a bloody habit of it move on to your idiot threads.
I rather like Donovan
Nothing wrong with The Don.
I ordered it for the Atmos mix, but I’ve heard the older multichannel mixes and of them, Alan Parsons’ quad mix is the best. But they didn’t include that on this release for some reason.
There’s no reason to buy this if you don’t have a multichannel speaker setup. The original stereo mix was done by Alan Parsons, and it’s all you really need for stereo.
At some point I’m going to spring for a 5.1 etc etc Blu-ray system then spend a fortune rebuying, again, things I already have to listen to them on it. I just know it. The only thing stopping me is not having a room the right shape.
A five-sided room, presumably…
I bought this for a tenner, despite not having surround sound. Yet.
I’d like to say thanks to Bargey for his review before the others decided to thread crap. You don’t have to agree but if you have negative views be constructive not down and out idiotic.
I’d also like to thank Lodie for bringing The Don to the rescue. Did you know it was The Don who gave Roger Waters the idea for TDSOTM when he first heard ‘The Intergalactic Laxative’
Kuds for the first T.
I think it should probably be THE DON.
This arrived on Friday for me, which was unexpectedly early. I was going to save it for a Christmas present, but I couldnt resist the urge yesterday (particularly as it was also national album day and I had an hour to myself in the house).
Magnificent. Totally agree with the review. If you have a tenner to spare and a surround system, you’d be daft not to.
My ears were maybe trying to tell me the new mix is missing that genuine Alan Parsons 1973 EMT plate reverb, but that’s just daft audiophile talk and probably just my imagination. This is the best sounding album in the universe and was always destined to be updated (with, thankfully, appropriate care and subtlety) as technology moved on.
But, hold yer lugs, Baron, is it any good? What are the tunes like?
Hello Retro, I answered your first question ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️ there.
The tunes? I’ll have to give them a few listens, y’know unfamiliar tunes, get used to ‘em.
Or was you referring to The Don? If so ‘Godlike’ is appropriate.
Hey Retro, I’m playing it again and it is bloody marvellous.
Dark side or DON SIDE?
I prefer the new redux version from Roger
I don’t remember ordering this but it arrived today. I don’t have a Blu-ray player.
There’s a coupon offering 25% off the price of the new limited edition
DSOTM Blu Ray player inside the box holding the SDE disc
Huzzah!
Wow.
You can probably get one for 20 quid in a charity shop
How do you connect it up? Via the stereo speakers? Or a completely different system via the telly? I’ve got a telly at one end of the room and a stereo at the other.
Most lower-cost Blu Ray players have only one HDMI output, which carries video & digital audio. Many TVs have a TOSLINK optical digital audio output, which you can connect to the stereo.
Many blu ray discs carry both stereo and multi-channel audio tracks.
Select the stereo soundtrack on the disc, switch on the telly, listen to the stereo soundtrack through the hi-fi. All good.
But select the surround soundtrack on the disc, switch on the telly, listen to silence (or noise) through the hi-fi. The optical lead can carry 5.1 channels, but you need a surround decoder to make sense of it. Most surround sound decoders nowadays use only HDMI connections.
People actually do this? 🙂
Without falling asleep half way through the instructions?
A means to an end, innit.
When I bought my player, I made sure it had a TOSLINK output to connect directly to my hi-fi, so that I can listen to my XTC Blu Ray Audio discs without having to switch the telly on. I also paid about 20 quid more to get one which was “chipped” so that it plays discs from all regions. The only thing it doesn’t play is SACDs, of which I have half a dozen.
My player actually has on-board 5.1 decoder and line-level analogue outputs. I have a pair of active monitors and a shelf to put them on behind me, so I could easily do 4.0, but I can’t be bothered.
How do you watch movies now? You don’t (shudder) use the TV speakers do you?
These sort of things are also going out of fashion, my local Value Village often has 5.1 receivers for practically nothing, sometimes with speakers
Some of us are Mel. You and Fenton are clearly Rowan and Griff. Now, can I have a bag on my head please?
Dai makes a good point. All those surround nerds getting into Atmos are trading in their 5.1 gear for peanuts.
Has anyone noticed that the lyrics in the booklet start with The Great Gig in the Sky on page 14, then continues with Money through the rest of ‘Side 2’ on pages 14 to 17, then goes to Speak to Me on Page 18 finishing with Time on Page 19. I assume this was a mistake!
