This is Squid. They’re great, they’re also a bit weird and very much reflect an interesting seam of bands who had clearly ingested all that ‘free’ music online and ingested Robert Wyatt, This Heat, ACR, Talking Heads etc which I got to see live before Lockdown such as Dry Cleaning and Pozi.
Here they are doing a brilliant Robrt Wyatt track which will be ingrained in the memory of most 80s John Peel listeners and will hopefully reassure you that Squid are a force for good. I had tickets for a sold out gig in 2020 – I shall stick around for 2021. Anyway you can buy this (plus a cover of Steve Reich ‘Clapping Music’ ) on bandcamp in aid of the East Bristol Food Bank

It’s heartening that weirdness continues.
That’s excellent. Odd and mesmerising. I remember hearing the original on the Peel show. How heartening to see a young band who clearly aren’t remotely influenced by the Absolute Radio playlist.
I was first alerted to Squid and Black Midi, by – name drop alert – Martin Moscrop of ACR.
It doesn’t really do anything for me, but I’m pleased they exist.
Today’s youth are lucky to have free access to stuff like The Pop Group. Imagine if their only influences were limited to what they can pick up cheap in charity shops – every second band would sound like No Parlez.
I enjoyed that.
