New album – The Cleansing – out on Nov 1 with a London live show a couple of weeks before
Huge fan since the OO’s debut album and the two shows I saw in Manchester in 79/80.
Having fucked himself up so badly on smack, was amazed how he managed to come back after
what was apparently a fraught OOs reunion with the splendid How the West Was Won
While not nearly as keen on the follow-up, Humanworld, was happy to fly over to the UK
to see his May 2019 London show in support of that album – the first time I’d seen him since
his brief comeback during the days of Woke Up Sticky almost a quarter of a century before.
Sure I can’t be the only OOs/Perrett fan whose looking forward to this…

Big fan of the Only Ones, or, rather, some of the Only Ones’ stuff. ‘Even Serpents Shine’ is an amazing album and John Perry must rank as one of the most underrated guitarists around. That said, I am not overly keen on all their music and some of Perrett’s solo work has passed me by. I may clamber on board again with the latest release.
I saw the Only Ones at their Shepherd’s Bush Empire concert in 2007 and it was very good (there is a video of it). They also appeared on ‘Later, with Jools Holland’ in 2009 and Perrett looked truly wasted. The new song they performed on TV, never released as far as I can tell, was excellent. However, the promised album never materialised. ‘Homme Fatale’, written by Nina Antonia, is a recommended read.

I saw them at Oxford Poly. JP was excellent, the rest might have wandered in from a local pub gig.

The second Only Ones album is a model of why musicians should not be allowed to produce their own recordings.
yorkio says
What? Even Serpents Shine is great!
Junior Wells says
A bit muddy isn’t it.
fentonsteve says
Indeed. Recorded through the proverbial sock.
yorkio says
Interesting. I’m listening to it right now, albeit on Spotify, and it still sounds sound fab to me. Maybe I’ll give the vinly a spin a bit later too.
Rigid Digit says
2017s How The West Was Won was a corker of an album. Nearly as good (and sticky) as the Only Ones stuff
2019s Humanworld had it’s moments, but not as good.
Looking forward to this one …

Only know one song, the one that featured perennially in Peel’s Festive 50 until the criteria was changed
deramdaze says
That criteria presumably being ‘… has to be by the Fall!”
Twang says
All you need is “Another girl, another planet”.
Freddy Steady says
Or “Out there in the night.”
About his cat.

I always liked the b-side, Lovers Of Today. It really rocks.

The appetite to witness potential car crash performances from addicts seems insatiable. Not a dig, per se, at Mr P, who I hope is getting all the help he wants. I gather he’s clean and sober, now, but that he wasn’t seems to be the attraction for many. See also Evan Dando, whose tour dates have just gone up. The irony is that I’d be fascinated to see either.

A pretty tenuous claim to fame, but I was at school with Peter Perrett although I was 4 years older than him (Bancroft’s School). He was expelled a year after I left and lasted a year at Haberdashers’ Askes before he was expelled again.
Jaygee says
An even more tenuous to claim is a good friend of mine got married to an old gf of PP’s.
Having remained on good terms with the man child, Lynne introduced Kevin to him during one of his lengthy lay-offs. Kevin said the most interesting thing about PP were his teeth which were quite disgusting.
PP Is also big mates with Rod Liddle who wrote the sleeve notes for the last lot of OOs re-releases and sometimes namechecks him in his ST column

My carpenter family did the refurb at the National Gallery and my Mum went to the reopening party. She spent hours chatting with Tracy Emin, despite not knowing who she was.
What was TE like, mum? “She had terrible teeth.”
deramdaze says
Rod Liddle has a friend… bleedin’ hell, I didn’t see that coming.
Worthy of its own thread, surely.
retropath2 says
I’ll swear I was sat at a table with Liddle at Sidmouth last week, down in the town, discussing business diaries with, if there is one, Mrs Liddle. Looked just as he does in the Sunday Times column header. I want discussing, I was having a flat white. Didn’t take to him.

@Junior-Wells
Just got this yesterday. Every bit as good as the reviews suggest
