Long-serving band member, who was sometimes roadie, sometimes sideman, sometimes full band member, sometimes not. Was a part of the most recent lineup. 65 is no age, very sad for us fans.

Always liked his vibe. Nice to see quite a few tributes on the socials and it made some of the news bulletins, especially considering the reputation The Cure has as being just Robert and interchangeable sidemen. Seemed to be a genuinely liked and respected person. His brother Daryl serves a similar offstage role for Depeche Mode I believe: tech guy, roadie, gofer, tea and sympathy, that kind of thing.
I wonder if there are any other offstage crew who have enjoyed a similar ‘promotion’ to onstage member (aside from one-off incidents covering for ’emergencies’).

Yes @DanP – Daryl has been in the Depeche Mode world for decades. He was even stood in for Fletch when he became ill during the Devotional tour in 1994. Alan Wilder taught him Fletch’s parts. There were jokes made at the time about how long that must have taken!
I believe the Bamontes attended the same Basildon school as Gore, Fletcher and Alison Moyet – so this has led to a long friendship between the two groups.
