Hello
We’re having a party to celebrate me and my wife’s 50th and our kids’ 21st, 18th, and 16th birthdays.
What 3 tunes would get the place shaking?

Musings on the byways of popular culture
As previously noted, these occasions are not the time to educate anyone. Therefore:
1) Get Lucky
2) Titanium
3) We Found Love
And if you must do something a bit less charty, have a go on this:
Also – happy birthday to all!
Rudimental feat John Newman – Can You Feel The Love
Chic – Good Times
Calvin Harris – Summer
Earth Wind and Fire: September
Ce Lo Green: Forget You
Outkast: Hey Ya
Hi Ho Silver Lining, YMCA and Come On Eileen.
Dancing Queen by Abba

Don’t Stop Movin’ by S Club 7
The Night – Frankie Valli
Tainted Love – Gloria Jones
That’s Not My Name – The Ting Tings
Party Hard Garth!
Happy Hour – The Housemartins
A Town Called Malice – The Jam
You Really Got Me – The Kinks
All of these records have guitars on them. From bitter experience I will tell you that the sound of a guitar will clear a dancefloor faster that CS gas. Unless it’s played by Nile Rodgers (The guitar, not the gas)
Get Down Tonight – KC And The Sunshine Band
You Should Be Dancing – The Bee Gees
Grease is the word – Frank Valli
Have a good one!
Let It Whip – Dazz Band
Devil With a Blue Dress/Good Golly Miss Molly – Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels

Outside bet:
John Grant – GMF
GMF is a fine tune, but Christ, it’s about 4 bpm!
I’m surprised someone who was so meticulous he could arrange it so that his three children were born on the same day as his wife’s birthday (great idea btw – over the years it saves a fortune on cake) hasn’t already got the tunes sorted..
Fact is, that’s a very small sample you have there and will know your own family’s particular bangers better than any of us…
….aaaand people are still choosing records with guitars on. It’s only a matter of time before somebody nominates Yours Is No Disgrace.
Set You Free- N Trance
Don’t Leave Me This Way- Communards
Feeling So Real- Moby
Anything by David Guetta or Calvin Harris
Set you Free!
Anyone who doesn’t dance to this song is immediately dead to me.
Correct. The same goes for Dreamer.
There is no single song I can think of that has provoked so many blissed out, arms round your mates in the centre of the dance floor, “isn’t this the greatest night ever?” moments as Set You Free.
It is utterly undeniable and it makes the whole world seem beautiful and brilliant.
Set You Free- holy fuck – 20 years old!!
As an aside – who was the act often on totp around then – european (Belgian or German I think), dance, female singer, short hair, did strange gymnastic-like poses whist singing? Been bugging me for a while (the act, not her)
Rosalla?
I suspect you mean this…
Gala – Freed From Desire
Gala! Many thanks. I can sleep again!
Always makes me think of this off Shooting Stars
Shake It Off
Uptown Funk
Happy
Job done………….
Is also correct. I don’t like Happy very much, but there’s no questioning its power to fill a floor.
And Shake It Off is such a great shout that I think we all just need to listen to it for a bit.
Uptown Funk is marvellous. No matter how many times I hear it (too many, probably) I can’t expunge it from my head. Tremendous piece of pop. And yep, I’m with Bob on Shake it off too – another terrific pop song.
Jump Around – House of Pain
ABC – Jackson 5
Crazy in Love -Beyonce
Thank you all for some smashing tunes.
Off to Spotify to investigate. Will report back.
Billie Jean – Michael Jackson
Respect – Aretha
Bug Powder Dust – Bomb the Bass
A cover – The Lemonheads – Mrs Robinson
Go for Always Loved a Film by Underworld. It’s the feel-good hit of any summer and will tell your wife and family just how you feel about them.
(Make sure you get to the chorus at 2.19 to see what I mean.)
