Check out this fellow, playing four parts himself with split-screen video. AND his name is Tom Penguin. How much better can it get?
This is astoundingly close to the sound and feel of the two original pieces. Phew…

Just to underline the fellow’s seemingly effortless brilliance, here are the MO playing ‘Vision…’ in 1974 – and there are NINE of them…

Tom Penguin? A Goon Show reference? (See “Insurance, The White Man’s Burden”)
I sincerely hope so.
Colin H says
I’m hoping it really IS his name.
Declan says
Jeez, he’s phenomenal. Just the time signatures are a major challenge.
Colin H says
Yes, I wonder in what order he approached it? I mean, how do you select a click track for these pieces? You would surely have to map it out bar by bar and then create a click track in moving time and THEN drum to it… or put a guitar part down first, or…
Declan says
Seems to have a screen on beside the drum stool, shape of the composition would be programmable to a computer nerd (which he would also be given his age), and besides, probably did the drums first anyway. Where else would you start?
Colin H says
Well, I’ve certainly put guitar parts down to a click track and then had drums overdubbed – though I’ll concede it’s hardly a textbook approach… 🙂

Remarkable.

Terrific find! Mr Penaguin (for that is his name) has also posted a staggeringly good versh of God Only Knows.
Colin H says
Not Vishnu Only Knows?

I Guess I Just Wasn’t Made For These Time Signatures

That’s impressive alright. I do like these kind of videos. I’d love to be able to do what this guy does, just knocking off a cover of The Move’s Hello Susie. Granted it’s not quite as Mahavishnu-y.
Declan says
Double take. Just checked my Move DLP, sure enough, on there, a Roy Wood composition. Amen Corner had the hit though. Never knew it was a cover.
