New material from the permanently self-reinventing Oh Sees. I’m a sucker for 70s acts of the rock ‘n’ prog genre who could, if needed, get a bit funky, so the throwback groove on this is a most welcome reminder of that old school rhythmic quality. What I particularly love about this track is that it sounds like it’s coming from a band itching to play it live rather than a band relying on the studio to create the energy and vitality. At around 1’35” there’s an unexpected nod to The Fall which made me laugh out loud.

Who else would be in this genre? Do you mean funky jazz, or Upp?

Going to see them again in September, great live band. The double drummers front and centre are mesmerizing.

I have a problem with The Oh Sees – I’ve got some of the music and I’ve seen them live but they seem to knock stuff out at a phenomenal rate – which means *nay quality control* in my book. If they could only just make a record every couple of years and compile the best stuff they’ve done they’d potentially be a force to be reckoned with. As it is, they’re just one of those cult, fuzz-psych bands that can’t help but churn out more and more and more of the sort of stuff they can do in their sleep. See also Ty Segall, King Gizzard, Brian Jonestown Massacre. I guess that doesn’t fit with their ethos of splurge it out in one big psych mess and never wash your jeans — but they take up far too much space in Probe Record shop for my liking.

As a big fan of Oh Sees and BJM I have to disagree with you Dr Volume even though you might possibly be right.
Floating Coffins one of the most exciting albums released in last few years and I am looking forward to this new release in August and hope they have more stuff out next year.
Incidentally not quite as prolific as BJM who released an album last month and have another one in September.
