a subtle difference in or shade of meaning, expression, or sound.
We’re not allowed nuance any more are we? It’s all got so polarised, so tribal you either take a side or don’t get involved. What if you believe in a general point of view but from experience you know that some of what “the other side is saying has some validity? It’s always been so in sport, especially football. No Man City fan will express any other view than “Ronaldo is shit”. Clearly wrong but no City fan could say publicly just what an exceptional talent he is. It’s something I’ve never understood.
This attitude has crept into every topic of conversation. Trans, race, the police, immigration, Brexit, politics, cyclists, drivers, music, everything and anything you must take a side. No nuance allowed, tolerated nor required.
I once got into a bit of a Twitter spat with Jeremy Vine over his cycling campaign. His enthusiasm is endless, his campaign absolutely worthwhile but he shuts down any opposite view so I called him out on it. Couldn’t he use his profile to try and dampen the fire rather than fuelling it? Absolutely not. All drivers and cars are dangerous, all cyclists are innocent victims. Well no, some are, not all. Try being a pedestrian on a footpath when the local peleton wants to break their personal best. There’s always two sides.
I always want to add to the debate about knife crime among primarily black youths. I worked with some lads of West Indian heritage. Lovely blokes that I employed. Great at their jobs. Would not for a second contemplate living with their children and the mothers. This wasn’t some marriage or relationship break down it just wasn’t what they did. Now I’m Not saying all knife users are black, I’m not saying all stay away dads are West Indian but I would like to be able to have the discussion. I tried with the lads I mentioned and just got shrugs of it’s what we do. Can I raise it without being deemed racist? Probably not so the discussion and potential help, education etc is shut down.
Should my 92 year old mum decide she wants to go swimming do I want a transitioning man in the same changing space? No. Does that make me transphobic? Apparently. There are some men who would use it as an excuse. But obviously not all a conversation needs to be had. It can’t just be shut down under a torrent of abuse and threats. Should Kier Starmer be able to answer the cervix question with nuance, not a stark yes or no? Of course he should.
Call men like Couzens out? Absolutely. Call out a fake transexual? Don’t you fucking dare. Are all police psychopaths? No. Does a bloke, laddish culture allow him to operate? Absolutely. Nuance. Discussion. Leads to culture change, education, understanding.
I know that here in our Internet safe place we generally are able to display some nuance but even here we can do better. Corbyn had some sound ideas but he was unelectable to many. I can wish that both points of view are deemed acceptable.
Are all Del Amitri fans grey middle aged people with a fucked up relationship history? Well actually yes they are in the main. Shit example…
I don’t know the answer. Listening helps. Really listening. If we don’t listen to views we don’t necessarily like we’ll never learn anything. Sprinkle some nuance into your life and maybe listen to the opposite view…
