This is Always on my Mind…no, not that one. This is the other Always on my Mind by Tiki Tane.
I’d like to see if you can think of other examples. Didn’t Saxon have a song called Ghost Town? Didn’t The Rubettes have a jaunty instrumental called Atrocity Exhibition?
Now I quite like the Tiki Tane song… but perhaps we can build a Spotify playlist of mostly disappointing imposters.
It’s just what we need to cheer us up.
Blue Monday. No, not that one.
I love that song so much. I have to get my res’, cos Monday is a mess!
When I was at school back in the day the PE teacher was doing a quiz at the end of the lesson.
“Which football team plays at Anfield?”
“How do you spell that?” asked my friend Dougie.
I was impressed. Dougie obviously knew, as I did, that Stirling Albion played at Annfield. The PE teacher, apparently didn’t, and responded in the way that all Scottish teachers did in the 80s when one of their pupils had identified a gap in their knowledge.
“I said ANFIELD!” He barked back aggressively.
Has there been a title used more than The Power Of Love? Do you immediately think of Frankie? Or Huey? Jennifer? Maybe 10cc?
Here’s T Bone Burnett…
I think I am right in saying that if you asked ‘who had a hit with The Power of Love in 1984?’ you could potentially get three correct answers…
I thought Jennifer and Huey were 1985?
In fact I think of Huey Lewis and the News as the 1985est act in pop history, probably because of Back to the Future.
Ach, trust you to spoil it. Could ahve been a good pub quiz question I had there.
Danny Brown, the eminent hip-hop artist, has released an entire LP called Atrocity Exhibition. I wouldn’t call it “jaunty”.
This is pretty jaunty. One of my favourite hip hop tracks of the last decade.
Brilliant. But also stressful. Need a cup of tea.
I suppose it depends on what you do for a jaunt.
I was talking about The Rubettes and jaunty is their M.O. They even wear their hats at a jaunty angle.
Pick up the Pieces…no, not that one…
That song has always stuck in my head, but I haven’t heard it for years. It stands up really well. Only the vocal production sounds a bit dated.
I like that one. Should have been a hit – certainly has a 10CC/Smokie vibe to it.
Wikipedia tells me that they came from The Strawbs and after this turned into the NLSATFH, The Monks.
My brother had that album, along with The Strawbs’ Grave New World
BC, it got to number 8 in August 1973 – so, arguably, it WAS a hit…
Hudson & Ford wrote the Strawbs’ “Part of the Union” before they left – here’s a clip from TOTP with John Ford up front singing and Dave Cousins strumming a 12-string back with the rhythm section…
https://youtu.be/KdOCWUgwiWs
Sorry – I was foiled in my research by the dash between Hudson and Ford.
Dash it all!
However, specialist knowledge on my part – I have both of these on 7”, bought with pocket money in 1973, aged 12ish…
I was 7 in 1973 – pop music was TOTP and Radio One. Possibly “Saturday Scene” with Sally James – that might have come later.
Sally James….”sigh”…
Didn’t that guy used to operate Sooty?
You’re thinking of Richard Thompson.
The H-F head warbler is more rockin’ the Maurice Gibb vibe I think.
He looks rather like James Middleton. He even has the same suit!

Layla as in Allah, rather than Layla as in Pattie Boyd
https://song.link/gb/i/1522467052
Much prefer the RT one there. The slow version of EC’s Layla is something they could play to me at Guantanamo Bay and I’ll sing like a canary.
The Dave Clark Five had hits with two different songs entitled Everybody Knows.
Chris Rea did two different songs called September Blue.
T-Bone Burnett did two different songs called “I Can Explain Everything” on the same album (“The Criminal Under My own Hat”).
Always down for a paaaaar-tay, Mr Curtis…
That’s very very funny. I guess the next challenge would be to dub the JD song over Russ Abbott.
Which reminds me…
Love Will (either) Keep Us Together (or) Tear Us Apart:
Yikes that’s a difficult listen. Clever though.
Stairway To Heaven
Led Zep pilfered a lot, but often (sometimes or eventually) gave due credit.
I don’t recall seeing the name N. Sedaka on Led Zep 4 though
Nice one, RD. Wish I’d remembered that…
Stairway to Heaven was an ever-present request from those recovering from motorbike accidents when I did hospital radio in the 80s. Handy as a toilet break. If I’d have known about this one, I might have chucked that on too as a “bonus”.
Ship of Fools…no, not that one…or that one…
https://youtu.be/Aj894itX6S8
Which “Ship of Fools” were you referring to, fitter?
The only two that I’m familiar with are by Bob Seger and (of course) the Grateful Dead.
Grateful Dead was one: Robert Calvert was the other…
Having said that, I came across songs called Ship of Fools by Erasure, Percy Plant and the Doors while I was looking for the clip…and the Bob Seger number…a popular song title!
Also World Party…and Dr Strangely Strange!
The World Party one is a favourite song of mine. Thank you.
The Doors was the one that came to mind for me!
Let’s Dance – # junga junga junga (dun dur dun dun dun) – puuht on your red shoes and….#
no! Not that one.
Neither of which is the original or best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNLXxDMxe18
Of course! You’re right there.
Cinnamon Girl – NY or LDR?
Both, I think. I have heard (and liked) smatterings of both artists and should probably delve into them a lot more. Lana Del Ray might be easier to begin with.
What about P?
That’s NZ’s own Keisha Castle-Hughes in the video. I saw her in a play in Auckland about 10 years ago. The opening scene involves most of the cast mingling with the audience as if they’re at a social gathering – and then after a while they join in with what is happening on stage. She came up to ME and asked how I was doing and we had a brief chat. I’ll be available for selfies later.
I saw her in what was, I believe, her first role at the age of 13 in Whale Rider…terrific film, as I recall.
It is. It made her name, really. Nominated for an Oscar to boot.
Weirdo (with apologies for the rubbishness of the video quality)
Or Weirdo
Edit – Whoops, this was supposed to appear at the bottom. I’m not calling anybody a weirdo!
My Girl. Both songs are completely brilliant – neither would disappoint anyone with an ounce of musical taste.
Madness.
Temptations
See Also:
Monkey Man – Rolling Stones / The Specials (or more correctly Toots & The Maytals)
Concrete Jungle – Bob Marley / The Specials
Don’t forget Kylie and The Wiggles.
And this banger, from the underrated Uh-Oh album, the DB record that sounds most like Talking Heads IMO.
Not underrated by me, Moose. That album and its predecessor Rei Momo are favourites of mine…
And talking about the Bob Marley/The Specials interface, they each had a song called “Rat Race”.
Or more correctly The Maytals.
Pedant – you wouldn’t catch me… oh, yes you would.
Wishing Well – Terence Trent D’Arby, Free, Nick Lowe or Paul Weller?
“Here I Go Again” by the Miracles, the Hollies, Country Joe & the Fish, Rihanna, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Kim Richey, Archie Bell & the Drells or Glenn Jones?
I don’t know the answer to this one, but I know it isn’t Whitesnake.
Crikey. This has taken me down a less-than-jaunty road. Juice WRLD is no longer with us but he left this rather touching song.
I know this by osmosis as Juice Wrld is the first (and seemingly only) choice of Offspring the Younger.
Born to Run – Bruce or Emmylou?
I have on my ipod
Crazy- Seal
Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
Crazy- Patsy Cline
Crazy – Icehouse
I think the Icehouse one is the also-ran in that list.
Only because this thread made me think of it, here’s the gameshow “Homonym!” from the peerless 30 Rock…:
(And in Iranian!)
Bob who? ….. Oh…
… not forgetting Costello’s brilliant “I Want You” as well …
Shack’s isn’t bad either. Superlative Scousing. The song is practically wearing a shell suit.
Always liked this by Marvin….
Cuh. As any fule kno, the best version is by The Inspiral Carpets and Mark E Smith. Nobody said it was gonna be easy did they?
Nobody said it had to be fair
All of the chances taken together
All of the changes we had to bear
Get It Right – Joe Fagin’s * stonking theme to Auf Wiedersehn Pet II
(* not the Liverpool FC manager)
It seems the Only Connect question setters have been influenced by this thread – see tonight’s music round.
Well I always watch it on Tuesday nights – so I will look out for it.
On reflection, this makes sense: the person who sets the music questions on Only Connect may be one of our regulars…I have my suspicions…
Only thing is, I’d reckon the series is recorded a good bit before air time, probably all episodes over a week or so…
Yebbut, yebbut….er…space-time continuum anomaly?
No, I take your point – but, just in general, the kind of music questions set on OC seem like something one of our own might produce…
Ooooh, an interesting hypothesis! I wonder who?
(I’m Spartacus!)
(No, not really)
Who was it started the thread?
It was me but I don’t have anything to do with Only Connect.
Makes me think that a “AW-friendly Phew! Rock & Roll Only Connect” thread might be fun. Let’s try it out, shall we?
What connects these bands?
Pulp
The Velvet Undergound
New Order
Wings
They each have one woman in the lineup?
A little bit more….?
Erm, a woman on keyboards? Maybe not!
Nearly there – it’s one woman in the band, who isn’t the lead singer.
Bellowhead is another example.
And Talking Heads.
Hold on by Tom Waits, En Vogue and Wilson Phillips. I forget who did the first one.
And Age of Chance. Undoubtedly the first…
More importantly was it a wig sported by VCM and why no mention of the hair colour change?
Continuity announcer alluded to the colour prior to the start of the prog…
Missed that bit, it had started when I turned on.
Is it my imagination – or does her hair still have ginger tips this evening?
Slik & Demiss Roussos – both had number one singles in 76 with Forever & ever.
Altered Images and Stevie Wonder – both had number 2 singles in 1981 with “Happy Birthday”.
Pajp, late as ever.
Grabbed my copy of Peter Gabriel I from the shelf this morning and, low and behold, track 2: Modern Love.
Not to be confused, of course, with DB’s Modern Love.
