Rochford Winery , Coldstream, Victoria, Australia.
Cold Chisel are a legendary band down here. Massive catalogue. Hard rockin, singalong anthems, radio friendly – they are the band that should have had massive global success but left it too late or lacked the stamina – whatever, it didn’t happen. Jimmy Barnes solo , an inferior version, has had some success They have reformed a few times for, no doubt, highly lucrative tours and this time they were playing wineries. Sign of the times I guess as, back in the day, their vodka fuelled performances would have been better located in a distillery.
But I had never seen them in all my gig-going days. So it being summer down here, an outdoor gig seemed a good idea. Started to get a bit anxious with all the bushfires and their first gig at another winery in central Victoria was cancelled due to smoke. Our gig was second and Mrs Wells and I had secured gen admission tickets via an insurance company we used. Parking close to the gig, express lane to the bar all going well. Until we sat down. I kid you not, the moment of arse touching grass prompted a heavy wind fuelled downpour that did not stop. The temperature dropped from 33 celsius to 15 in ten minutes. The first band had not started and it was another 5 hours before Chisel were scheduled to appear. The weather radar indicated solid rain at 90% likely for the entire night. So sitting in a puddle, wet despite the poncho and cold, sober as I had to drive back to Melbourne and drug free I had visions of hours waiting to get out of the car park ,a cold, bronchitis, asthma…decisive action was needed and indeed it was taken. Fuck this – I’m off. Mrs Wells, not a huge Chisel fan didn’t demur. So as the fans were still piling in we piled out.
Apparently the rain stopped some 5 hours later as Cold Chisel came on. It had been the wettest day in Melbourne and surrounds since the mddle of winter.
I guess I will have to hand in my rock dog card now.
Bit hard to tell given everyone was in hooded raincoats or ponchos but I suppose 40 to 70 age.
It made me think..
Should I have stuck it out?
