Great opening gambit there from you – I concur that Rock and Roll by the Zep is a fine choice.
To raise you, I could probably choose any number of Hendrix tunes, but I’ll choose this one from Electric Ladyland. Come On (Let the Good Times Roll) – a blistering ROCK track that sounds like a horse trying to break into a gallop. (Sounds very “live” as well – possibly recorded in one take with no overdubs?)
(Arthur crosses his fingers and hopes Vulpes doesn’t notice his choice is a teeny shade above 4 minutes)
Great song, and I’m not usually a fan of punky guitar stuff from that period. I had no idea that was their debut single, but, that being the case, that’s a magnificent achievement.
When I saw this on TOTP in 1977 I thought it was the most exciting song I’d ever heard. Then they played She’s Not There by Santana which was also wild. Not much punk and new wave about.
Proving that if you want to *really* rock, German can add a certain, erm, je ne sais quoi, how about the mighty Rammstein with 3 mins 56 secs of Du Hast? Join in if you know the words!
And with a similar Teutonic sound, and 1 second within the 4 minute limit, here’s Cyanide from Deathstars (maybe a bit niche, but that usually doesn’t stop me):
I know all the words not because I’m a smart arse and can speak German, but because the version of Sehnsucht that I bought in the USA included “Du Hast” and “Engel” included versions sung in English as well as German. I’m told “Du Hast” translates as “You Have” but was sung as “You Hate”.
I saw them live on this tour. They wiped the floor with the top billed act. The next day, everyone at school was talking about them. They’re still great.
Wow! Whataplaylist we have here. There’s enough adrenaline on this thread to give an elephant a cardiac bothering.
One thing I know is that, despite never having seen the Zepp themselves in their pomp, I did see the best band to come out of Seattle back in the day, with a vocal powerhouse and twin guitar frontline who were a ton more attractive than Percy with his banana, and this was their stonkingly great, blistering encore:
Watching this in the light of the exchanges about The Mud on here recently, I’ve just realised that I think I’ve always thought of Lee Brilleaux as Les Gray’s disowned brother.
I continue to be dismayed by the number of YouTube clips which give me the “Black Screen of Not Available”. Anyone know if it’s a location thing? Or a setting which I need to change? Or an internet provider thing? Very odd – does anyone else have this problem?
For context: 15 of the 56 clips above are unavailable…
None on here, but I do sometimes get that – often due to copyright issues or uploader not making available in this country.
Youtube’s international standing clearly isn’t international (and why would it be with different copyright laws in place in every (or almost every) region).
Other causes may be time-outs when I’m on me phone or tablet (just a black box, no text)
I suspect something in your browser or security settings is to blame. Is your browser blocking clips that start with http and only allowing ones that are https?
This is the under four minutes of excitement that opened my eyes (and ears) to jazz. It starts out with tons of energy and inhumanly precise playing and just gets better and better as it goes along. This track has energy of a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10. The Harlem Renaissance was one of the most innovative and creative times in all of history.
Chester Bangs says
4 minutes 4 seconds but there’s a few seconds silence during the intro…

There can be more than four minutes?

I think in this shoot out , if the criterion is a ball tearing riff that comes crashing in from the get go, Acca Dacca are going to win by a street.
