I really fancy this, but the description says the record plays ‘inside out’ …what the actual flip does that mean? Here is the thing I have read….
Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets share an incredible live version of their interpretation of Echoes. Propelled by Nick Mason’s drumming, this recording captures the band with Gary Kemp, Guy Pratt, Dom Beken and Lee Harris at the peak of their powers. The performance was recorded on August 1st, 2024 at the Centennial Hall in Frankfurt, Germany by Steve Carr. Echoes Live was mixed by Steven Wilson with consultation and assistance from Dom Beken. This 12″ was half-speed mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road and uniquely plays from the inside-out for the ultimate sound quality. The B-side includes an exclusive etched design.
The grove is cut to allow it to play from the centre outwards. It’s been done before, usually for recordings that start loudly and get progressively louder, such as this recording of Ravel’s Bolero.
Blimey, who knew?! After nearly 70 years of playing records one way I now have to put the arm into the middle – sounds just….well….wrong!
Be careful not to miss lifting the arm at the end of the track. I know of some record decks which can’t handle an inside-out cut and so the stylus falls off the record at the end – it can be quite an expensive listen if you have to replace the stylus every time…
Yes, that was my first thought @fentonsteve. I rather wish they would do a CD version tbh.
If I recall correctly, you have a decent turtable with a manual arm lift? In which case it will be OK.
Miles Showell does all his mastering at 24/96 and cuts the vinyl at half speed, so it should sound fab.
What couldn’t they have just made a bloody record?
That’s the major trend in next year’s RSD sorted then
If this sells well they’ll be doing XTC’s original reverse polarity Skylarking for RSD 26
If only my 50s and 60s singles all had ‘exclusive etched designs’ on the b-side.
Extra marks for, at 4000 copies, this release being 1996000 copies fewer than the advanced sales for Can’t Buy Me Love, and considerably lower than the crowd Leyton Orient should attract for the visit of Mansfield Town this Tuesday.
Gotta love the bullshit era we’re living through!
