The majestic Curry Mile used to be one of my favourite parts of Manchester. A seemingly endless procession of curry house, each one touting something slightly different from the rest and many of them open to the pretty early hours. But times and tastes have changed and the strip now seems to mainly consist of Shisha joints and kebab cafes. The flagship restaurants are long gone it seems.to me.
So , am I wrong ? Is there still somewhere I could get a good curry? It’s a significant birthday in a few weeks and I’m planning an early start in some of my favourite pubs and would love to end up early evening with a curry.
Has anyone been recently?
My wife and I went for a curry in December before picking the kids up from Sam Fender at the arena. Without any recomendations we went to Ziya Asian Grill and the food was good, definitely on the spicier side though if that’s a concern. Whilst it was a busy Friday night we were never hurried and there was a nice atmosphere. There was even a chap with a guitar playing, Coldplay, Beatles, Dylan at one point as well.
Enjoy your birthday.
Thank you @NE1
This does look lovely. Almost too lovely. Maybe not quite enough neon scuzziness
I haven’t been, but I’ve heard that the air hangs heavy like a dulling wine.
As a graduate of Manchester Uni (well UMIST) and starting my working career there, I have many fond memories of Rusholme – not only the curry houses, but that was a great little shop where I stocked up on TDK SA90’s for copying CD’s from the record library.
But I haven’t been back since I left in 1993, so I’m probably not much use as help.
Shamelessly piggy backing this, as in the vague vicinity, 20 – 23/3/24. Actually, am in the Northern Quarter, for the Manc’s Folk Festival. Any recommended places to eat and drink in. Or anyone up for a mini-mingle?
Shame I’m there the day before 19th at the library for a second look at the Bill Leader exhibition, there’s a bit of a do on then. I suggest you have a look when you’re there. Otherwise see you in Brum in April. @Retropath2
Thanks, @hubert-rawlinson
Sounds a good call, the Leader exhib.
Hope you got the snap from Monday night, with our feline cheesy cheshire man.
I did I shall respond in kind in April.
We’ve had breakfast / brunch at Cafe North a few times when over on trips and it’s been good, I think that’s in the Northern Quarter.
Oddly…I was also a graduate of UMIST back, back in the early 90s.
I was back in Manchester about a year ago for a wedding and convinced my wife that a trip to Rusholme for a curry was just the thing.
First impressions…place had changed significantly but the (marvellous) smell of frying onions was obvious from opening the taxi door.
We tried to go to MyLahore but the queue was out the door so we went to the Mughli Charcoal Pit – food was great but maybe a little empty for a Friday night. MyLahore was packed with a queue waiting on tables until late in the night. And not crowds of guys on the beers but two and three generations of families together. If the local population were voting with their feet, I’d say MyLahore was the winner.
Read into all that what you like but Tripadvisor also has the MyLahore as its #1 (Mughli as #3).
As I say upthread I was in Manchester last night and met up with my son who lives in Stockport. He took me to ‘This and That’ a curry place that started in 1984. Very popular and heaving when we got there about 7.
He’d even offered to buy dinner particularly as a choice of three curries and rice was a fiver, (the beers I got us after were more expensive than the meal). I must admit it seemed a bit salty but then I don’t add a lot of salt to my meals when I cook.
