I bought myself a new guitar for my birthday. It’s a little early. My birthday is not til October but I couldn’t pass up the chance to own this guitar. It’s rather special.
It’s a Squier Classic Vibe 70s Telecaster Custom Maple Fingerboard 3-Color Sunburst.
Squier are relatively cheap guitars made in Indonesia (I think) under license from Fender.
It’s based on an early 70s design with a single coil pickup in the bridge position and a wide range humbucker in the neck.
Keith Richards had one of the originals and played it on all those classic 70s Stones albums.
It sounds stunning. The back pickup nails the Keef tone perfectly. The front is beautifully mellow.
I’m off to put the guitar into a G tuning and make a bloody racket 🙂

5 string G?
Askwith says
Well… You can tune E A D G B E down to D G D G B D but it does sound better with the low E removed so you end up with G D G B D

Think the original pic isn’t working.

I’ve got a Squier Jazz Bass. 30 years old now, bought in a shop in Wassenburg (or Heinsburg, not sure) with German Tax deducted (Merverstuer??) as a perk for serving in Her Maj’s forces. Still sounds great and easy to play.

Yeah, I have one of those. Japanese-built Squier Silver series. Played and sounded better than the equivalent Fender of the time.

@fentonsteve
Yep it did. The “real” Fender feels heavy and ponderous in comparison.

I bought my son a black Squier Strat when he was about 11 – spot the deliberate error 🙂 Was an excellent guitar, still is.

Can’t go wrong with a Tele. I just treated myself to a Baja Tele and put flats on it for jazzy stuff. Fab. I’ve got a Jerry Donahue signature one for twangy stuff.
And making matters worse a mate has loaned me his Yamaha Mike Stern which is effectively a high end Tele… and has intimated he’s inclined to sell if I like it…arrgh, GAS…
Askwith says
Blimey. two Telecasters. Soon to be three. No wonder they call you Twang 🙂

I wasn’t intending to buy another one but I wanted a jazz guitar and tried a load of hollow bodies and just didn’t like them for various reasons but Teles are as popular with jazzers as with anyone else…. plus that Baja just got to me. Arrgh.

I got one of the 50’s classic vibe ones, butterscotch finish etc.
Squiers aren’t *really* the poor relation any more. Obviously they tell you that you’re getting infinitely more oomph/heritage/status with the Fender marque but you’ve got yourself a fine guitar there!
Askwith says
Thanks Ivan. I was very tempted to get the 50s one in butterscotch. That really is the classic look for Telecasters isn’t it? 🙂
