SDE reports a 2CD or 3LP live album taken from the 2017 Manchester International Festival, snappily entitled ∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes…
In the absence of Hooky, I wouldn’t normally be interested, but this was great on the idiot latern with tuness majorily reworked for 12 keyboard players.
Out 12th July.
Ordered the lovely-looking vinyl edition of this.
Was lucky to see one of the actual shows at the old Granada studio in Manchester.
It was so enjoyable, I didn’t realise until the end that the bloke stood next to me in the audience was Jarvis Cocker.
Didn’t know if this would be your cup of tea, Steve?

A cafe stuffed with high-end hi-fi gear and the emphasis on listening? Yes please!
My favourite from the Spiritland FAQ is this:
“CAN I REQUEST A TRACK FROM THE DJ?
No.”
Looking forward to this release alright, not a huge fan of live albums but the fact that they did something a little different here makes it intriguing.
Sub-Culture sounds good from it:
I have mixed feelings about their live albums. The Troxy one sounds like a bootleg and is awful, I really don’t see why it was ever released, but the Bestival set is wonderful.
Like many on SDE, I do wonder why there isn’t a BD as well.
CS 10 pounds, vinyl 45 pounds. Interesting …
CD not CS
Yeah I went to one of these shows
Good gigs I’ll probably pick up the CD don’t need a deluxe vinyl…saving up for the inevitably expensive and lavish PCL box set.
It was interesting them to tackle a less obvious set list and less guitar orientated stuff
Always thought that when hooky left they should have just dialled up their more electronic side and maybe played as 3 piece, but Barney can’t resist rocking out with Marionbloke and Bass Bloke.
Coincidentally, just watched the documentary Decades about this. Was ok, I’m sure bass bloke and marionbloke can’t believe their luck, especially bass bloke who, while clearly talented, sounds exactly like Hooky. Maybe that’s the point but he did waffle on about interpreting the songs his way.
Barney does come across a bit dull while The Drummer and his wife seem very normal. Decent programme though and I bet the 20 year old synth players had a blast.
