Owz about that then.
Sounds more rockier than previous outings – this is a good thing. Almost like he’s taken another left turn and arrived back where he once was before.
I wonder if it will sustain over an entire album, or he just fancies a bit of experimentation here and there.
Hey … it’s Weller – he can do what he likes (and usually does).
Put me down for a purchase (it was going to happen whatever it sounded like to be honest)
I’d file that under the “Hmmm I need to hear the album” category, but like Rigid, I’ll probably get it. I wish he’d cut that awful hair though. (Says me, who needs to be first in the barber’s on April 12th.)
PS. Have you noticed how particularly messy BoJo’s hair is at the moment? He’s leaving it long because he’s going BALD. This is going to be really funny.
OMG, I read your Saville comment and though “Surely not!”
Then I watched the video and though “OMG Surely not!”.
He always seemed a down to earth sort of guy, but has he surrounded himself with Yes people? Are people afraid to say him (like Trump) “Your hair does not improve the way you look. Au contraire it makes you look like a complete dick”.
I delayed getting the last album On Sunset for several months until it was on the Dodgers site for a fiver. I think it was his best album since Stanley road so will definitely get this one
Funny, he parked his own accent through most of the Style Council and his solo career until, I think, 22 Dreams.
I think the whole singing-in-an-accent thing is interesting – eg Andy Partridge adopting an American accent after XTC stopped going to the USA (or indeeed anywhere else)
The Boomtown Rats video a year or so ago used the same visual effects. It has the benefit of smoothing out the wrinkles of the performer. He still looks like a cross between Savile and John Cooper Clarke though.
I wouldn’t be first in the queue for it, you understand, but the Modfather should do a Rocker album.
The full Monty – Obscure b-sides on Sun from the 50s, 11 songs, 30 minutes, done in a week, with Rocker iconography all over his look and the sleeve/video artwork. Ironic, yeah? Only, with NO irony. Think Jagger in “Performance.”
He’d be acknowledging the Golden Age, as he has (rightly) done since the get-go, but he’d be doing exactly the opposite of that which his (staid, boring, tedious) fanbase would expect.
Actually, you know what, I think I would buy it.

I’m not sure he’s got much up top. And the world is not ready for Bald Paul. Or Bauld Pall.

I agree. I thought the same myself when I saw him on TV yesterday. Definitely scalp starting to show through the thining hair.

He can do whatever he wants with his hair, but next time please write a song. Not sure he did in this case.

Who’s he borrowed his voice from? It *really* reminds me of someone else and I can’t think who.
(It may not even be a singing voice I’m thinking of.)
This is going to torment me…

On Sunset is right up there for me among solo Weller efforts. Love it

Its Ian Dury’s voice in Jimmy Saville’s body.
Rigid Digit says
There’s a touch of Hugh Cornwell in the voice
Dave Ross says
Danny Dyer perhaps?
