He was a bit of a revelation on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast last week. Nothing like the miserable git I was expecting (and I’m a big fan).
He seemed to comprehensively blow it after Gold – till then and with Whiskytown he was superb, then hubris took over. I’ll check out out. It’s be nice if he’s got a grip again.
I actually really like his version of ‘1989’, and in truth his new album is musically in the same vein as that.
Gold is actually one of Ryan’s weaker efforts. After that an avalanche of releases most of which are excellent, a minority are so-so and half a dozen absolute belters: the most interesting artist working in pop today.
So which are which in your view? I thought Gold was superb. He was a complete knob when I saw him live and I think that put me off too.
I like the new album, which encouraged me to seek out 1989, which I hadn’t bothered with. It’s a real belter.

His output has been inconsistent but there is much fine music from the pen and guitar of Ryan Adams.
