I’d forgotten about how Ted’s cursing rant during rehearsals for ‘My Lovely Horse’ was based on The infamous Troggs tapes. Then I found this great animation. ‘You big pranny …’
Jeff keeps the “ELO Box” in his garage. It saves so much time having it at home; there’s no need to even walk to the studio. Every couple of years he trundles it out, on its long spindly legs made of old steel shelving, running on funky blue wheels he got from an old golf cart, positions it in the sun in the middle of the patio and runs an extension lead out from the kitchen and plugs it in. On the back there’s a panel that folds down to reveal four sets of reel to reel spools, which he loads up with nice analog copies of a random selection of previous ELO albums, and perhaps a Beatles album or two. Closing the panel back up he ambles around to the front of the machine, which has a USB slot into which he presses a little memory stick, and a single large red button marked “Merge”. A contemplative deep draught of clean Californian air, a brief scratch of the tum, and he reaches forward and presses the button. The four tape spools simultaneously begin to turn within. Jeff blinks behind his shades, feels the canyon’s heat and returns to the house and puts on the kettle. After a leisurely cuppa in the games room, he walks back out to the patio, and the machine has done its magic once more. The four spools have played themselves through, and the tapes have ceased to turn. Jeff withdraws the USB stick from below the big red button and smiles to himself. The ELO Box has done it again, and a new ELO record is ready once more.
What a beautiful little vignette. And spot on, might I add? Jeff isn’t the only artist to have such a ‘box’. In fact, they’re all the rage so I’m led to believe .. and so much easier than trying to write something new. Still, I suppose the pool and jacuzzi won’t clean themselves. Right. Back to the games room. Darts anyone?
I really like it, and think Jeff Lynne is A Good Thing.
He’s a muso I envy more than most, as it appears he continues to be like a kid with a train set. The recent profile of him on the Beeb confirmed this impression.
It’s clear that on this album he won’t be sharing his new found passion for Albanian dubstep, and praise be for that. It’s of course hugely Beatley but done exceptionally well.

What odds on it sounding like the old music from Jeff Lynne? (and I like him a lot).

Isn’t that how Father Dick Byrne’s Eurosong entry starts?

It’s more ‘Armchair Theatre’ than the old ELO stuff. Pleasant enough but hugely derivative.

Oh stick that tune on during the X-Factor ‘journey’ segments and you’ve got a number 1 on your hands. Prolly!
