I was out on a food shop and I thought of you lot! Vegetable Balti no less!

Musings on the byways of popular culture
Where is this @lunaman?
Waitrose Holloway Rd London.
Ah. We have a Waitrose up here in the North of England so I might check this out when I go for my Bitburger.
It’s “Fray” for goodness sake.
But it’s vegetarian with a lovely, wispy coiffured top. Surely ‘Fey’ Bentos.
lol
Whoops!
I think the difference is you can cook a Fray Bentos pie from when the oven is cold. For a Frey Bentos you have to wait till the Heat is On.
Clever
If Armageddon arrived and all that was left was some tinned goods and a Frey Bentos Veg Balti I would only force it down in The Last Resort. I think this flavour must Take it To The Limit. (However if they made a cheese and onion one you could Take It Cheesy.)
Cheese and Onion? They do.
I bought one on Tuesday and I’m looking forward to trying it – the aardvarkess has never ever experienced a Fray Bentos pie and it’s probably forty years since I did.

The Vegetable Balti version was sadly not available at the branch I visited.
Oh I say! That’s wonderful.@milkybarnick
It is “Fray.” It’s a meat processing town in Uruguay.
Worth checking your local Poundland. They often have the original FB pies. For a pound.
Bought a couple of these (Veg Balti and Steak & Gravy) to see what I’ve been missing.
I was thinking when I saw them in Sainsbury’s that they were smaller than I remembered but, thinking about it, the last time I had one was a very, very long time ago and I was a lot smaller then.
The Vegetable Balti variety is very tasty, pie crust a bit disappointing.
However: A question for the massive. How does one safely recycle the lid of the tin when the pie has been eaten. A deadly disc of sharp tinplate just waiting to injure someone.
Handy throwing weapons for the Zombie Apocalypse, I suppose. Far more effective than 12″ singles (heavy duty work gloves recommended).
Can you double it up and fold the pan around them? I do something similar with standard tin cans before putting them in the recycling – give them a rinse the drop the tab-pull lide inside before crushing the open end.
I had a go today at folding it up and it was surprisingly resistant to that. The concentric ridges in it mean quite a bit of force seems to be required. Not good when the whole thing is one sharp edge. I decided to desist for now before I lose a finger or two. Think I’ll have to get my heavy-duty work gloves out of the boot of the car for trying that again.
The dish seemingly has no sharp edges at all after removal of the lid. Maybe I just have a particularly good tin-opener. In fact, the dish could possibly be re-used to make one’s own pies, if one was so inclined.
I bought a steak and kidney one yesterday in anticipation of a weekend alone in february.
The last time I had one was likely about 40 years ago. I am filled with excited anticipation.
Unlike the Simon and Garfunkel Uncut magazines there were only 2 left on the shelf in Waitrose. Suggest they are either incredibly popular or so unpopular as to only stocking 2. Which is it guys?
Sainsburys in Watford had several of each variety on the shelf on Wednesday.
Never mind the Fray Bentos with its disgusting thick pastry. If you want a fabulous veg pie try these: https://www.higgidy.co.uk/product/roasted-butternut-squash-feta-pie
