It’s a picture disc, so don’t expect it to sound very good. Picture discs are essentially two clear flexi discs stuck onto a picture and a slab of clear vinyl.
I would have agreed with this unreservedly until a couple of years back, but without knowing what they’ve changed, the standard of picture discs has massively improved. Okay, you’ll never get Kevin Gray or Bernie Grundman going near one, but you might be surprised. Having said that, this won’t be getting played – I shall live with the WAVs from work and keep this as an investment. I do hope my lads like vinyl, as it’s all they’re getting when I cark it….
Although I do like a lot of what I’ve heard, I can totally see why you might feel like this. I seem to like their music a lot for a few weeks and then not return to it much.
Although some might think this sacrilegious I’d also quite like to see what they might achieve on a really big budget.
I kind of wish they had access to a proper producer. Someone who would say “that’s really good, but that one’s not.” They have made numerous albums under the FM/School of Language/The Week That Was banners, and produced numerous others. None of them are 100% great, although some are better than others.
I did have a chat with someone at their Memphis Industries label along the lines of “they’re so prolific we just can’t keep up”. Are FM the new Prince?
I’ve heard a lot of their stuff. Like Mousey a couple of comments upthread, I really want to like it, but don’t. And the main reason is that a lot of their tunes sound like a half-finished XTC song, lacking a verse or chorus. I love XTC, and don’t mind someone sounding like them, whether deliberate or not, but Field’s stuff sounds half-finished, and not in a lo-fi way. Production might help.
You beat me to it.
What’s their obsession with coloured vinyl, though? It is a Sunderland thing?
It’s the only bit of colour the Mackems get…
There’s also a rather nice ‘Dinked’ edition of the new album – with a picture disc! Their first, I think. Sold out everywhere already…..
I managed to get the dinked edition. It does look rather lovely.

Steady now @fentonsteve, that’s veering into ‘interesting’ territory
Sorry, Sir! Won’t happen again, Sir.
Their last album, Making a New World, was only on red vinyl, CD or Cassette (W@nker alert!)
I know there’s a war on, and the tour had to be curtailed and everything, but what’s wrong with good old-fashioned black vinyl for us grown-ups, eh?

I know Picture Discs sound crap but they’re fun. I particularly like my Parallel Lines one…
Music isn’t supposed to be fun!
This is my fave. A pig wearing shades and carrying a boom-box. Why, of course!

Available on black vinyl from https://www.musicglue.com/fieldmusic/products/flat-white-moon-vinyl-cd-or-download
Select “Vinyl – sun yellor or standard black” then select the colour. Then stand on one leg and recite your internal leg measurement…
Black vinyl? Whatever will they think of next?
Field Music.
I kind of like them.
No, I like what they are trying to do.
I wish I could REALLY like them.
Why do I not REALLY like them?
Are they kind of like 10CC? Very clever, admirable, but ultimately not connecting on any level beyond the chuckle of “oh yes very clever”…???
Dunno…
Angular pop, occasionally discordant.

A FM “best of” album would be amazing.

This is a good 25-min introduction to FM:

They peaked with ‘Plumb’ for me. Not bettered that since…
