I listened to this a couple of times yesterday. It’s very good isn’t it? ….and speaking of first listen on NPR, I’ve been giving the new villagers album a lot of listens this week too – it probably appeals to a Calexico audience too.
Took delivery of it this morning, gave it a spin and loved it immediately. Not sure of favourites yet, but it seems like a good summary of their career as a whole – some big stomping Mariachi-flavoured numbers, scorching desert indie-rock, lovely country-tinged ballads, a sprinkling of electronica and a very evocative instrumental. Pretty much what you’d expect from them except it’s augmented by a host of guests including Neko Case, Amparo Sanchez, Sam Beam and that dude from Devotchka whose name escapes me. The bonus disc version is well worth getting as it’s just as good!
Villagers! I saw them a few years ago at Field Day, really enjoyed them, then completely forgot to follow up on them. Thanks for the reminder johnw, will give them a go!
I’d say their most accessible and most varied album is Feast of Wire. My personal favourite though is The Black Light which is about two-thirds instrumental.
I`ve ordered the double vinyl edition. I`m looking even more forward to hearing it after reading the comments above. Don`t want to hear it until I place the platter on the turntable.
I ‘m looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of this. Have listened to the stream on Q’s website and love it.
I discovered Calexico only two years ago, but they immediately clicked and I ended up spending an awful lot of money on their catalogue. Not only are their official releases, but there are numerous ‘tour’ albums which are of very high quality, too. These are a mixture of live recordings and studio recordings (I hesitate to call them out takes).
Feast of Wire is fantastic, but Carried to Dust and Algiers are up there, too.

Heard it on NPR yesterday. Sounds pretty good to me, but then they’ve never really released a duff album.
This is one band that has past me by. Some pointers please. Where to start?
Feast Of Wire’s their best imho
Start with the 1st, then the 2nd, then the 3rd – I think you`ll know what I`m driving at!

My favourite is Garden Ruin but FoW gives you a good place to start

Love this band
Just discovered them via Giant Sand. Seriously good. I’m spending a bunch of cash on them at the moment.
Seriously hacked off I missed them last week at Brighton. This is my favourite track from Edge of the Sun
