I do hop the content is better than the title – and it is not a concept album about a bloke who works in a call centre and then enjoys model trains in the evening
30 years ago, I worked in Harlow, Essex. Having been lunchtime record shopping with my pal Fingers, we popped into McD’s to grab a bite to take back to work. We were about half way down the queue, as the young man in a shell suit at the front was about served. The door to the street swung open and a young lady – let’s call her Sharon, it was Harlow after all – bellowed:
“‘URRY UP, DARREN! I’M DYIN’ FOR A DUMP!”
Needless to say, ‘urry up Darren! has become a catchphrase for, ahem, dropping the kids off at the pool.
This is probably not what Mr Albran is referring to.
I was delighted to hear this. They did well to keep the recording quiet, as I don’t think anyone was expecting an album – just seemed like a few big “hits” shows were on the horizon.
I liked it. I liked the Magic Whip at the time but never listen to it now. In fact it’s one of my least favourite Blur albums. I’m hoping they’ve rediscovered their emotional impact
Darren? Darren?

A play on Damon?

That’s cheered me right up, thanks.

I like this song very much.
They start their warm up shows tonight at Colchester Arts Centre.
It’s all right, nothing really special I don’t think. A chorus wouldn’t have hurt.

Same – The Magic Whip was good, but had no legs.
Just been played on 6Music. Like it. Nice and downbeat.
