It’s shit.
I’m waiting until they pay me to listen to it.
Good album for those who are prepared to listen to it.
Just played it for first time (downloaded mp3s), much better than my expectations. I wish he’d spend more time on the lyrics (and sometimes, tunes). but, as a first impression, there are 4 or 5 beautiful songs.
Bought it shortly after its release, having been suckered (yet again), by the usual ‘return to form, no really’ reviews. Listened to it and found myself embarrassed for him. His voice has now completely gone; not that that would have made any difference to the abysmal, tune-free songs. He’s not only plummeted to Earth, he’s burrowing toward its core. He was probably my favourite artist of the ’70s, but his output of the last 20 years has been pitiful.
I thought Psychedelic Pill was very good. Here’s my cut out and keep guide to last 10 years.
The Monsanto Years (not heard)
Storytone 6 (out of 10)
A Letter Home (not heard)
Psychedelic Pill 8
Americana 6
Le Noise 7
Fork in the Road 4
Chrome Dreams II 6
Living with War 3
Prairie Wind 7
Roughly every second one is decent and if you look at how many albums contemporaries have released in this time his strike rate song-wise is probably at least average.
Macca 4 albums (1 cover album)
Paul Simon 2
Stones 1
The Who 1
Dylan 5 (2 cover albums)
Leonard Cohen 2
Joni Mitchell 0
Brian Wilson 5 (2 covers, inc 1 Beach Boys)
Prairie Wind did have a couple of good songs. Still to listen to Pill. Or those I bought, I doubt if War, Noise, Fork and Chrome have one decent song between them.
Chrome Dreams has Ordinary People on it, which is very good – problem is, it dates from the Bluenotes days. There’s a version on the Rock n Roll Cowboy bootleg collection (which is essential) that’s superior. Didn’t like Prairie Wind at all, but then a little quiet Neil goes a long way for me. Psychedelic Pill is a fine album, maybe the last hurrah for Crazy Horse? It’s no Ragged Glory, but it’s not that far off.
Know what you meant about quiet Neil, though I do like ‘Falling off the face of the Earth’. Had bootleg versions of Ordinary People for years before. Not sure if I’ve got Cowboy boot, though I’ve got tons. Will need to give Pill a proper listen.
I think the only good stuff we`ll get from Shakey is when/if he releases any more Archives. It is diminishing returns with new material old tunes in new songs, still love the old coot though.
Time to play my `Damn The Archives` boot.
