A song just popped on the Shuffle from an LP that I don’t know at all well. One of those that you get in a weak moment because critical opinion. “Hang on,” I said – to myself of course, largely because I knew no-one else in the house would give a flying one – “hang on, that sounds just like him out of the Blue Nile!” A quick visit to Wikipedia later confirms the encyclopedic breadth/colossal waste of time of my useless pop trivia knowledge.
This is an edited list of the guest personnel on that LP:
Rick Danko
Bruce Hornsby
Neil Young
Aaron Neville
Ginger Baker
Mike Mills
Paul Buchanan
Any guesses? This thread may well die on its arse but a long Saturday of not doing much lies ahead (for me anyway I have a bastard of a chest infection), so who fancies a go?
Clue: it’s from the Nineties
I’m guessing “Storyville” by Robbie Robertson ?
OK. This one clearly needs work. You are correct.
Look! A squirrel!
The nineties? That’s me out.
Crazy thought here: someone else could post a guest list (or a gusset list come to that) of a famous LP, and then the rest of us could – yes! – guess what that LP might be!
Mike Campbell
Chick Corea
Jerry Garcia
Neil Young
Mark Isham
Dave Gilmour
Richie Hayward
Is it Mariah Carey’s new Christmas album?
Is there any other kind?
Clue please Skirky
Warren Zevon’s Transverse City, I reckon. Not convinced about Gilmour, but Neil Young, Jerry Garcia and Chick are all on there for sure. Bought the vinyl when it came out!
We have a winner. Dave ‘David’ Gilmour added his signature solo remotely, back in the day when that meant flying the master tapes over, not dropping them in The Thames, and then couriering them back with a ‘Will this do?’ note attached.
I was coming into the thread to post it myself, but you beat me to it! Good album, the first Zevon I had.
An easy one:
Geoff Downes
Donal Lunny
Rolf Harris
Eberhard Weber
Percy Edwards
David ‘Dave’ Gilmour
Well many of these are Kate Bush regulars, but the presence of Percy Edwards would suggest “The Dreaming”
It would indeed.
Lowell George
Eric Clapton
Dr John
Mick Ronson
T Bone Burnett
Richard Manuel.
Ron Wood.
Ringo Starr.
Is that All Things Must Pass?
Too early for Ronno to be in that sort of company.
A very Kinky collection…
Good man.
Chester Crill, Chris Darrow, Solomon Feldthouse, David Lindley
Have to hurry you …
That has to be Lennie Bennett’s infamous – and unreleased – Christmas album, One Rainy Night in Southport. @Beany will probably confirm.
That’ll be the Beacon From Mars I’m guessing.
It is Kaleidoscope, but they are guesting on someone else’s album (Beacon From Mars was one of theirs). This is an unexpected goodie, if you know and like the band.
… and haven’t got your head stuck up the arsehole of the 80s.
Who, where or what is this arsehole of which you speak?
*snork*!
Snork wasn’t he with the Banana Splits?
Hahahaha!!!
After a puzzled Google sesh: blimey, I never twigged that! How can you own an album by a singer-songwriter for 40 years and not have noticed the presence of the entirety of another of your own favourite rock bands, whose own works you’ve had on your shelf for the same length of time? Everyday is indeed a school day. Nice one, HP, that’s fair made me shake my head in surprise.
Thanks, Foxy! It is a good one, isn’t it?
Dude, I’ve been listening to Roy Orbison’s Mystery Girl since 1989. It was only last weekend that I found out that The Only One features Steve Cropper and the Memphis Horns. This life-changing information is cunningly hidden, er, right there in the credits on the inner sleeve.
D’oh!
The inner sleeve! I remember them! My first was the original Sgt Pepper inner sleeve, a sort of wavy design in red by The Fool, which is worth more than an undiscovered Da Vinci painting these days. I also had LA Woman (Fr. the woman) with the transparent window sleeve and that weird crucifixion thing on the inner sleeve. And Satanic Majesties with both the red and blue clouds inner. Them was good an’ all. Eh? Eh? Kids today? Cuh!
As an aside to this, also supplying BVs on the same album (notably So Long Marianne) is Nancy Priddy, whose own album, You’ve Come This Way Before, is a soft-psych thing of beauty.
Try this one:
Stewart Copeland
Daniel Lanois
P. P. Arnold
Jim Kerr
Nile Rodgers
Laurie Anderson
I don’t know, but I like the sound of it!
It was a massive seller. And it had a name…*
*that could be a bit of a clue
Ooh ooh, it’s So, isn’t it!
It so is
I was listening to an album today that features Joe Pesci as a guest vocalist. Anyone care to guess the album?
No thanks.
*makes “loser” L with left hand*
Was it this one? A Christmas tune!
Nope, but that’s a stunner.
Is it “Reign In Blood” by Slayer?
Ha! If only.
I’ve only just realised that you said Joe Pesci. I’ve been reading it as Joe Pasquale…
You fucking stoopid fucking fuck.
Stoopid how?
I amuse you – how?
Fuckball.
I wondered if the above was this album at first.
This is probably a bit of an obscure release, but it is an album by an artist everyone here will know….I’ll add some clues if no one gets it!
Rory Gallagher
Leo Sayer
Zoot Money
Elton John
Albert Lee
Ringo Starr
Ronnie Wood
Michelle Phillips
Something by Harry Nilsson?
Leo Sayer though!
No, not Harry!
Roger Daltrey?
It was made as a tribute to one of the most important and influential figures in British rock and roll, who also appears on it.
Further guests…
Brian May
Jim Keltner
Klaus Voorman
Nicky Hopkins
Gary Brooker
Pete Wingfield
George Harrison?
Joe Brown?
Warmish with Joe Brown, but older.
Further clue – he’s not with us any more…
Lonnie Donegan?
Is the right answer – well done that man! Puttin’ On The Style from 1978.
Which I have a copy of to hand.
Rory is on blistering form on this album.
easy (if u no it)
Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, John Parish, Nina Persson and Dave Fridmann.
Is it Dark Night Of The Soul?
nope – but damn close
Night Soil Of The Dork?
You wouldn’t have heard of it.
It’s that woman, isn’t it? Smokey voice…she’s on the tip of my tongue…
Lucky blighter.
nah – k-a-w had the artiste – to an extent – but not the ablum.
Is an ablum like a vinly?
sort of.
Ah yes, it’s Sparklehorse. It’s a wonderful life. Thanks for the reminder, I’ve not heard it for a while.
OK, this was bothering me slightly @badartdog, like a loose tooth or a dangling piece of thread. I had to look it up – it is Sparklehorse but it’s “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Ithangyew.
Here’s one:
Paul Simon
Lou Reed
Further clues
Bryan Adams
Dave Edmunds
KD Lang
Is this one giving you all the runaround?
That’ll be Dion then, will it?
Yep, Dion – the marvellous Yo Frankie album from 1989. It’s one of my favourite records ever. King Of The New York Streets and Written On A Subway Wall are terrific songs on a consistently fine album. Paul Simon gets to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at one point. If you see a copy, snap it up.
Robin Williams
Bobby McFerrin
Goldie Hawn
Jeff Beck
Celine Dion
Vanessa Mae
Celine Dion
Jim Carrey
Billy Connoly
John Williams
Phil Collins
Sean Connery
Blimey, Celine Dion is on it twice! Must have some spoken word, I’m guessing..?
Is that George Martin’s last album?
That be the one
(with only one contribution from Ms Dion)
Is it wrong to suggest that Phil Collins version of Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End is pretty darn fine (probably only surpassed by The Fab Faux)
Its very good indeed, as is Jeff Beck on A Day in the Life, the rest isn’t that great, although my listening was confined to a quick few tracks on a listening post when it came out
Eric Stewart
Brian Jones
Paddy Maloney
Derek Taylor
The Halle Orchestra
Is it Sir Thumbs’ The Family Way?
Nope, but he is on it too.
Another clue. It’s not that Brian Jones.
Was this something Macca did in the 70s – sort of extra-curricular to Wings?
The presence of Derek Taylor and The Halle Orcheastra makes me think Percy “Thrills” Thrillington
Ooooh, almost there. All of Wings are indeed present and correct. But it’s not a Wings thing, or a Macca platter…
Fab McGear
Kerplunk!
Hubert nails it.
Not forgetting this one.
https://www.cherryred.co.uk/product/mcgough-mcgear-remastered-expanded-edition/
Nice interview with Mike McGear in Rock’n’Reel this month. To time with this re-release no doubt. Me, I preferred Lily the Pink.
It appears Jack Bruce played bass on LTP, Elton John Graham Nash and Tim Rice sang backing vocals.
Here’s the French version that I heard in 69 on holiday in France.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dr_UgK5tNkY
An easy one (if you know it of course):
Neneh Cherry
De La Soul
Roots Manuva
Martina Topley-Bird
Shaun Ryder
Dennis Hopper
London Community Gospel Choir
Ike Turner
I reckon they’ve all worked with Gorillaz, but I’m not sure if they’re all on the same album?
Yup. Demon Days
Robert Fripp
Kate Bush
Paul Weller
Phil Collins
Dave Gregory
Peter Gabriel III?
Thats the one
Harry Nilsson
Neil Young
Ry Cooder
Dewey Martin
Stephen Stills
Leon Russell
Danny Kortchmar
Jerry Scheff
Buddy Miles
The Monkees – Head
Sure Neil Young and Stephen Stills were on that album somewhere (I would check if I could be bothered, but it takes the fun out of guessing)
Correct. A clue also in the tiny Nez icon.
Phil Collins
Robert Cray
George Harrison
Womack & Womack
Chaka Khan
Daryll Hall
With Phil Collins and Robert Cray, I’m thinking it’s an Eric Clapton album – either August or Journeyman.
Correct! Its Journeyman
Phil Collins
Jaki Liebezeit
Dave Mattacks
Robert Wyatt
Andy Fraser
Phil Manzanera
Robert Fripp
Achim Roedelius
Möbi Moebius
Brian Eno – Before And After Science
?
For some reason, I recognise the name Achim Roedelius
And I think the rest played a part too
Dude… Roedelius was in Kluster! He’s like…. Elvis or something!
What he can’t do with a sine-wave oscillator ain’t worth mentioning, men Herr!
Time for some investigation, methinks
Mr Digit is correct. It is indeed Brian Eno’s “Before and After Science”
I’d owned the album for at least 30 years before I realised that the title of the track “Through hollow lands” is a quotation from Yeats’s “Song of Wandering Aengus”
I didn’t know that!
Is it Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Original Soundtrack?
For this comment, you may have my first-born
Albert Lee
Mick Taylor
Alan Gorrie
Robbie McIntosh
Ian McDonald
Stephane Grappelli
Is this Mike Thep’s Mann, Herbie? London Underground?
Aye, tis. Great players, rotten album
Oh, hang on. It’s a groovy thing! I have Mr Thep to thank for turning me on to the Herbster – I downloaded his discography from a torrent and am working my way through it. I love his hip jazz stylings.
Have a go at the Kaleidoscope thing upthread, why don’cha?
I can only suggest you don’t waste time on the London album. I have Memphis Underground (Sonny Sharrock, Larry Coryell, Roy Ayers, Miroslav Vitous) which is way better.
I’m stumped on K’scope. Not familiar with their oeuf, sorry!
Memphis Underground (Sonny Sharrock, Larry Coryell, Roy Ayers, Miroslav Vitous)
Wow, lineup! Must check this one.
I know this, because it cropped up in my recent Herbie Mann bitchfest! London Underground. Ken Livingstone on vibes, probably.
Note to self: refresh page before jumping in…
Eric Weissberg
Joe Venuti
Don McLean
Yusef Lateef
Jo Jones
Vic Dickenson
The Dixie Hummingbirds
Don McLean is a dealbreaker here – if not for him I’d of guessed a Leon Redbone album.
Would you indeed…for sure, TAPH finds himself in curious company.
I think we need a ruling here – I always thought the template was “the APH,” not TAPH. That’s just stupid.
Mildly out of order, shirley, rather than stupid? Even Homer nods occasionally.
I’ll just do a bit of curating of this subthread, @h-p-saucecraft, and say that you are both right and oh, so wrong. Leon Redbone it is, but the APH (SWIDT?) is not a dealbreaker. He plays banjo on LR’s first three albums, of which Double Time was the one I had in mind here.
Richard Thompson
John Cale
John Kirkpatrick
Russ Titelman
Willie Weeks.
Is that Julie Covington, Hubes.
It is indeedy @retropath2
Guy Garvey
Damon Albarn
No one? Hope Sandoval is on it as well, but I thought that made it too easy. There’s another guest as well, who would make it REALLY easy
It’s Heligoland isn’t it? You were thinking maybe Horace Andy would be the giveaway guest I bet.
Exactly!
Peter Sellers, Ian Anderson and David Bowie
Erm … is that Ian Anderson out of Jethro Tull, or Ian Anderson the beleaguered Editor of fRoots magazine and singer in the English Country Blues Band?
Steeleye Span I forget which one.
Now We Are Six.
Just checked and Sellers was on a different one to Bowie.
Booger. (They were both on Greatest Hits)
Bernard Purdie
Art Neville
Lowell George
Steve Winwood
Cornell Dupree
George Porter Jr.
Vicki Brown
One of the early Robert Palmer albums?
Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley
Correct!
Johnny Marr
Kirsty McColl
Mory Kante
Eric Weisberg
Robin Eubanks
Talking Heads
Their last one?
Correct – Naked
Rick Derringer
David Sanborn
Randy Brecker
Mike Brecker
John Siomos
Songs Of Leonard Cohen?
quack-quack oops!
No – I was giving you the answer to mine.
Ok, thanks, now give me the answer I’m looking for
Are you sure about John Siomos?
Certain
Something/Anything??
Good answer. Wrong, but good.
Sanborn doesn’t play on Something/Anything
Sandy Denny
Robert Fripp
Percy Jones
Keith Tippett
Phil Collins
Peter Gabriel (behind the scenes only I think)
Single, not album.
We were discussing this just the other day, weren’t we? It must be Charlie Drake’s “You Never Know”.
Got it in one
Not an album but where can you hear these?
Eric Clapton
Val Doonican
Liberace
Max Jaffa
Count Basie Orchestra.
Is it Beany’s episode of Charity Shop Classics?
The Intro And The Outro.
Maybe this constellation of musicians can be found on more than one album, but there’s certainly one that I’m aware of.
Donal Lunny
Sinéad O’Connor
Elvis Costello
Liam O’Flynn
Paddy Moloney
Declan Sinnott
Christy Moore perchance?
You are correct, Mr Rawlinson, sir.
Would you like to hazard a guess at the album?
Had to look it up I’m afraid couldn’t remember which one.
Voyage
Indeed. Voyage.
Elvis Costello
Sting
Lou Reed
Donald Fagen
Walter Becker
Produced by Gary Katz
Zazu by Rosie Vela
Yes!
Pete Townsend
Richard Thompson
John Cale
Ronnie Lane
Dudu Pukwana
Is that Mike Heron – “Smiling Men With Bad Reputations”
Tis indeed.
Danny Thompson
Peter Buck
Kirsty MacColl
Michael Stipe
That sounds like it might be “Don’t Try this at Home” by the Big-Nosed Bard of Barking himself, Sir William of Bragg.
Agreed.
Well done both of you
BORING!!!!
Anything by Dido?
Jaki Liebezeit
Harry Beckett
Annie Whitehead
Baaba Maal
Chaka Demus & Pliers
A Jah Wobble of some shape.Umbra Sumus, but I don’t recall Chaka Demus and Pliers.
A partial list of guests:
Bruce Springsteen
Elvis Costello
Tom Waits
J. D. Souther
Jackson Browne
Bonnie Raitt
k.d. lang
Jennifer Warnes
Black & White Night?
Yes!
Wow…. all I need to get one of these is to wait until everybody else has gone to bed!
