On December 21st 2015, I’ll celebrate my 50th birthday. One of my chums had the terrific idea of posting her top 50 songs, one each day, as she counted down to her 50th birthday earlier this year.
I could never choose a top 50. I think I’d even struggle to choose a top squillion. But it is a great idea. So I’m taking the opportunity to chart my life so far – a blistering soundtrack that instantly connects me to a life well lived, filled with happy, happy memories.
I’ll be making 50 posts between now and then. Sometimes just one song. Sometimes an A side and a B side. Sometimes a few tracks from an album. Sometimes an artist. Sometimes a genre. But every time, something that’s a significant part of my life in music.
As we’re massive music fans here at the AW, I thought some of you might enjoy the ride. I’m sure our lovely admin would frown on me posting each entry on here, but feel free to stop by the blog and comment.

Great idea, but a real challenge if you’ve got 473 songs in your top 50.
You are right @raymond. At my last count, my 50 numbers 83… ❤️
The Rubettes. Odd looking bunch weren’t they? Singer and drummer – ok, but the other three… just a bit weird. Sailor were the same, the singer looked like a pop star, the others looked like Moss Bros sales clerks or something.
Go for it Today! Look forward to hearing your choices. Post them all. The admins won’t mind a thread with 50 posts. Perhaps when you turn 500 there may be a few grumbles.
Great idea – I will dip into it and look to see what comes up. I might even steal the idea myself as my 60th is next year. I assume you will be picking some songs that had resonance when you were younger but which you don’t listen to now?
Very much enjoying these, thank you.
Being born on the same day as yourself all be it a few years earlier and a fellow bluenose I’m going to follow your blog with interest.
Strangely, growing up, I had two great, if diverse musical heroes, Brian Wilson and Frank Zappa. Only later did I find out they shared my birthday. Oh yes them and Chris Evert!
Oh, thank you @the-engine-driver and welcome to the Sagittarius/Capricorn cusp club. I wonder if we’re alike….
I’m not a bluenose, I just had a big giant crush on Derek Parlane in the 70s. my heart lies with the mighty Greenock Morton – my home team – but I do love football and have had many an team, player or manager interest over the years.
Thanks for the interest in my blog. It’s a whole lot of fun so far and has been quite emotional too. ❤️
I’m seriously on the cusp! born 21st December 1953 at 1158!!
The darkest time of the shortest day in the year!
Morton eh? 12th December will be an interesting choice of music. I predict something suitably funerial!
Hi AW chums. From 50 to 40, it’s all here – Sedaka, Stewart, Weller, Lynne, Sayer. And more……
