Time for another of my guitar lesson updates. Alas, my posh guitar has been in hospital for a few months (badly dehydrated, unlike me…) but I now have it back and am joyfully picking away.
I have discovered the magic of double drop D tuning. It’s fantastic, and has got a wonderful folky sound. I came across it while learning the attached Kate Rusby number, and it really lends itself to picking. Anyone got any great songs in this tuning? Surely Nick Drake must have used it?

Try the Martin Carthy tuning, Vim: CGCDGA (or the up one tone variant DADEAB, if your guitar can’t hold the lower notes).
It’s less ‘forgiving’ than any of the open or modal D things (DADGBE, DADGBD, DADGAD, DADF#AD) in that you have to really figure out the shapes and not rely on a drone note to get you out of trouble, but it’s full of interesting sounds.
I don’t really use it – I’m more of a dropped D or DADGAD guy, but for chordal variation I’d recommend a partial capo – you use standard chord but get all sorts of lovely extensions and can still do the David Crosby moving chords thang.
