MUSICAL PLACEBO’S
I’ve been in hospital off & on for the last 6 months. My 25 year old daughter compiled & brought me an iPod (I only had books & puzzles first few days) I thought I’d list it ‘cos it was helpful in my ongoing recovery (Yeah cancer… I’ll beat the bastard)
Whatever – Aimee Mann
The Band (2nd album) – The Band
A Hard Day’s Night – The Beatles
The Greatest – Cat Power
Secret Profane & Sugarcane; National Ransom; This Year’s Model; Washington bootleg 1979 – Elvis Costello & The Attractions/Imposters/others, etc
Maggot Brain – Funkadelic
My Dark Twisted Fantasy – Kanye West
Greatest Hits – The Kinks
The Libertines (2nd album) – The Libertines
Exile In Guyville – Liz Phair
Van Lear Rose – Loretta Lynn
The Sunset Tree – The Mountain Goats
On The Beach – Neil Young
Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus – Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
MTV Unplugged New York – Nirvana
NRBQ; All Hopped Up – NRBQ
New York Dolls – The New York Dolls
Dolittle – The Pixies
Rum Sodomy & The Lash – The Pogues
Sorry Ma Forgot To Take Out The Trash; Let It Be – The Replacements
Elephant – The White Stripes
I knew about ¾ of this stuff (lots of faves) but I ended up loving the lot & I’ve only just realised she compiled & sequenced this alphabetically as I typed this.
Any other Massive music placebos?
Blimey! Your daughter has very good and varied taste.
I’ll nominate Aventine by Agnes Obel.
Good luck with everything. It sounds as though you’re a real fighter.
Superb! I doubt my daughter could read my needs as well as yours has read yours!
I’d need Swordfishtrombones, there is no Bowie (let’s go for Aladdin Sane today) and there must be more soul. Why not the Detroit mix of What’s Goin’ On?
Oh. Almost forgot. Get well soon, Bladderman! It’s not your bladder is it?
That’s a great playlist your daughter has put together. All I would add is that sometimes you may want to decompress while sipping something cold. Music For Dreams, Best Of: Vol.2 mixed by Jon Sa Trinxa is an excellent accompaniment.
And then, there’s always Astral Weeks. Sir Van.
All best wishes Mr B. Keep fighting the good fight.
Your daughter has done well – she’s obviously been paying attention to your musical tastes. I might have added Bob Marleys greatest hits and possibly best of Madness for a little light relief.
Posi vibes going your way….
Triff list! Congrats on having such a clued in daughter. All best wishes for the continuing recovery, and maybe every now and then kick back with some Lee Morgan or Grant Green for a Blue Note moment.
That’s a fine compilation, your daughter has done you proud.
Keep fighting and wish you well in your recovery.
Great list. Add some Little Feat. Hope the recovery continues!
In his excellent memoir, Lost In Music, Giles Smith is suffering in hospital in similar circumstances.
He finds that he can only listen to really glum music to endure the treatment and highly recommends A Walk Across The Rooftops by The Blue Nile which brought him triumphantly out the other end.
He discusses here in this book sample I can’t cut and paste. Get well soon

Some nice stuff there Bladderman and it has reminded me to investigate Funkadelic.
Keep your head up and be positive and good luck, let us know how you do.
“Pledge Your Groovallegiance To The Funk. The United Funk Of Funkadelica.”
Positive vibes to @bladderman.
If one of my daughters put together a compilation like that together for me I reckon I’d be a blubbering wreck. You’ve obviously brought her up well.
Should they do so I imagine it might have Van’s Poetic Champions Compose on it. Works for me every time. Oh and Handcream for a Generation by Cornershop because the whole family used to love it when they were younger.
Keep fighting the good fight @bladderman…
Best wishes to you.
I had surgery then chemo two years ago. Any music that was new to me at that time I find really difficult to listen to now. For example, the Lorde album that I played a few times whilst in the big chair just makes me feel ill now. Anything that I was already familiar with I can still play.
What a beautiful thing to do. It’s a tangible, thoughtful expression of her love for you. And a bloody brilliant idea.
I’m sure it’ll make your awful journey a whole lot better. You must be a wonderful, very proud, dad.
Hope it all goes well ️xx ❤️
