Been a dull ol’ week at Carolina Towers, shut in with a bug, but the highlight has been the arrival by courier of my first ever pair of toe nail clippers. (I went a bit mad with my birthday spending money). You can imagine the excitement as I rushed to prise open the packaging for I couldn’t wait to try them out. The instructions even said they had been designed for left hand and right hand use – ideal for southpaws* like me. Well, as you are no doubt eagerly awaiting the verdict, I will keep you in suspense no longer, 10 out of 10 for ease of use and results. They are made by Wilkinson Sword in case you want to know. So what has been the mundane highlight of your week?
*I don’t actually have paws. That would need a whole other class of clipper, probably.

A belated happy birthday!
Funnily enough, a mundane highlight of this week was using a highlighter pen (fluorescent yellow ) – one of life’s small pleasures.
Thanks! A highlight highlight. That’s going to be hard to beat.
Mundane highlight – Reaching the station late, thinking I’d missed my train to work, and being thankful for delays on the line that led to me getting my train.
I got a label maker at work this week. The jealousy in this office is cranked up high this week I can tell you.
@minibreakfast may also be jealous to discover I have no less than 4 highlighters on my desk, 3 of which I used daily!
Happy belated Birthday @Carolina 🙂
Show-off. 🙂
Your label maker reminds me that I love the opportunity to use a hot laminator. Last week I laminated a print-out of the 2016 Car Boot + Charity Shop Bingo card (with nine – count ’em! – new albums). I don’t need a laminated copy at all, but couldn’t stop myself.

Hot!
Aldo do a laminator for £12! 12! A4 only but still…
Which one don’t you use? My money’s on the green one, though some people think the pink and orange are a bit too same, but me, I like them both more than that limey sonofabitch. Christ I’m bored.
Thanks 🙂 I remember those dymo label makers in the 1970’s that etched out white letters on thin plastic strip, they were the height of cutting edge tech at that time!
@seanioio I now have in my possession a triple-coloured highlighter. It’s triangular. It’s the future.
Woah! A triple highlighter that is also triangular is surely the future! If the colours are Yellow, Green & Pink then I could reduce the number of pens I need on my desk greatly. Is it?!? 🙂
It is!
#gamechanger!
I need to get me one of those
Sadly, new oven mitts, impulse purchase. I’m so chuffed with them and they look so nice I don’t want really put them to work just yet.
The only answer, rather like those uber rich people who have two kitchens, one pristine on show and another “real one” somewhere else in their mansion, is to buy another pair, and get the new pair out for special occasions.
I opened a brand spanking new tube of toothpaste only this morning!
I had to have a little sit down after that I can tell you.
Just looked out of the office window during a boring conference call to see a seal frolicking in the river in the afternoon sunshine.
Which is nice. And pretty unusual for Newcastle.
Well I would call that a genuine moment of joy, which my very effective clippers could never compete with 🙂
Fixed a fault by moving the cable along one socket (5 pin DMX since you didn’t ask). After the week I’ve had, (breakdown of van and equipment which will cost thousands in repairs, alternative transport and lost revenue) I’ll take any victory, no matter how small.
Someone behind me on the train said a word at exactly the same moment as I read it in the book in front of me. For a moment I thought I’d passed through a portal into the book. Can’t remember what the word was, though, which ruins the story a bit.
It was ‘bulbous’. Sorry about that. I try to be discrete with my stalking, but when I saw what you were reading I couldn’t help myself.
He was reading a book about Captain Beefheart?
On the train?
Well, it was a “Fast” train after all.
Click-clack!
Could it have been “the” or “been” or failing that “squirrels”?
This thread demonstrates what a shite month January is. Mundane highlight of the week ? Seeing some snowdrops, some early blossum and even a few daffodills today. It’s coming, it’s coming.
Happy Birthday, Carolina.
Thanks! I think, other than for administrative purposes I will stay at the age I was.
I bought two double packs of polystyrene beads from the local massive conglomerate retail warehouse. I noticed the sticked on label/barcode said these were single packs, like all the other ones. So my purchase was meant to total $80 but I paid $40 due to a labelling error. I was fully aware of this and cackled diabolically as I left the store.
Happy birthday!
Updated the apps on my iPad, and the iOS on my phone.
Also organised my apps into a much more logical order, for ease of use. This involved a lot of frustrating drag and drop (why is this so hard? Move, yer buggers) but they are now organised in a much more efficient manner.
This will save me oooooh, a few seconds of ‘where the hell is the app store app? Why can I never find it? Why am I am idiot, why is everything in my life such a disorganised mess?’ *cries*
Very mundane, surprisingly satisfying.
Thanks 🙂 Every so often I do the same with my desktop icons which mushroom to a terrible mess, is v satisfying to see some clear blue space and makes my head a bit clearer too.
Having boiled the stovetop kettle dry yet again (what kind of idiot buys an expensive old-fashioned kettle for an even more expensive induction cooktop, I ask you? Me), I was sent out to buy an electric kettle since I obviously couldn’t be trusted with anything else.
Readers, I bought one, and I really like it. What’s more, it’s led to a really pleasing reorganisation of the kitchen which makes us both happy and makes us wonder why we didn’t see it before.
It was certainly a highlight, and it was certainly mundane. You probably don’t want to know any more.
Electric kettles are a wonder. I recommend you try out a toaster next. Saves all the trouble of putting them on a spit over an open fire,
Bought a pack of 10 soft grip black ballpoints, after the freebie Holiday Inn Express ballpoint I had previously been using ran out of ink.
Have never used a soft grip ballpoint – must add them to the Amazon wishlist!
I had to take Maiha, my weimaraner, to the vets twice this week. I may have to cancel Monday’s allergy test as she is now on antibiotics.
She’s probably allergic to the antibiotics.
She thinks they are treats.
Daft dog.
To be fair, they probably have sugar in them.
I just hope you’re keeping her off the booze.
She don’t taste them. Straight down the gullet. No booze or driving for a week.
No driving? How’s she gonna get to work?
She has a rover ticket for the train.
Arf!
(as it were)
I walked a big empty cardboard box to the tip. It’s only fifty yards away. They’ve changed the rules. Apparently, a pedestrian was injured by a car at another site. That could never happen here as cars can only go at 2mph. Still, I now have to wait at the entrance. A high-viz chap came to me and took my rubbish from me to deposit in the correct skip. It’s like having a servant. Marvellous.
Tips, I mean recycling centres, are great places of entertainment. It’s amazing what folk throw away. Back in the day I used to drive to a paper recycling centre in Bolton with an estate car packed with old papers collected for our charity fundraising. I would often return with unsold bundles of old Record Mirrors with free 7″ singles attached. You don’t get that much fun today with the internet.
You live fifty yards from the dump?
It’s a wonder your online handle isn’t Stig.
It’s only small, consisting of four high tech skips that crush everything into a tiny space and some recycling receptacles (glass, white goods, clothes, metal). No smelly stuff. The council have made several attempts to close it without success. Occasionally, I bump into someone famous, such as ex-Everton captain Dave Watson. Everton’s defence could do with recycling him.
Yet another slate fell off our roof, which is to be expected this side of biting the bullet and getting the roof replaced*. It’s apparently due to nail-fatigue, which just puts me in mind of a jaded manicurist.
(*Apparently this is a more complicated process than I thought. I assumed that the old roof would simply be lifted off and and new one plonked down in its place, like a gigantic bechimneyed hat. That’s the last time I get advice on structural repairs from Terry Gilliam animations)
Could you not just cover the roof in cling film? Sounds much cheaper.
I seem to have run out of cling film for some reason.
Hur.
We’ve had our roof replaced since this. It was indeed more complicated than that. Thankfully we paid someone else to do it.
I bought a tin of Humbrol paint – No 26 Khaki, since you ask – which I didn’t have, to paint a model I’m building.
Hummel figurine?
TMFTL.
No, a little tank.

I am unmasked.
On Thursday I charged my phone on the train from one of those portable power supplies. It did it really fast, and I was amazed it actually works. Fair put a spring in my step.
I also installed a battery powered light with motion sensor outside where it illuminates the steps which always stress Mrs. T out in the dark. Works brilliantly, and for 15 sovs I was thrilled with the results. I am a devoted advocate. Get one here:
The pothole in the road outside our house was filled in on Wednesday. I’d reported it at the beginning of the month and they came out to mark it in a few days, then the cheeky sods updated it on fixmystreet.com as “fixed”, presumably to make their stats look better. Still, it’s been done now.
Yesterday I bought one of those double adapters with 4 USB sockets so that the wall socket in the kitchen which normally has phones queueing up to be charged can now be a peacefully organised and happy zone.

Had my comfort zone of carpets removed and replaced with Karndean (spelling?). Looks like wood, OK, looks like laminate, but without the infernal claw clatter that 2 dogs would otherwise provide. Rather taken with it, specially as the original quote was for 4 big ones. By sourcing separately the stuff and it’s fitting, the squeeze got the price down to £1500. Anything I am drawn to purchase on this site will seem a bonus for the next 2 and a half grand. Yay!!
I am told to recommend Justin, beany hat and stubbly beard, talks a bit, if anyone wants new floors down.
I have found a very cool way to fold T shirts on YouTube.
I traded in a Line 6 amp today against a different one. The new one was a Fender Champion and the guy in the shop played a Stratocaster with a tremelo arm on it. The guy in the shop looked blank when I mentioned it.
Re-visiting this thread: it’s striking how many women were posting regularly 5 years ago…
We saw them off with good old-fashioned sexism.
That is unfortunate…
