I have been watching the old episodes of The Avengers showing on TV and very sadly Emma Peel’s missing husband has unexpectedly returned. So she says a poignant goodbye to John Steed and goes off into the sunset.
Diana Rigg was superb in The Avengers – the very best sexy posh there ever was. And a special mention for Patrick Macnee – how cool did he look in those velvet collars and chelsea boots. In one episode the other day, said Chelsea boots had green elastic sides. Those were the days.
Yes – remember being rather struck by Emma Peel in my pre-pubescence.
Mum’s friend Babs had a touch of the Peel about her. Crossed with a little Valerie Singleton.
Always got a bit hot and bothered should she pop over.
“Hello Fin, my little soldier” she’d say.
“Um, Hell …um, Bobs, I mean Babs” I’d say. Blush wildly.
“That’s Auntie Babs to you. Stand erect little soldier” Mum would say.
They would both giggle.
She was gorgeous, wasn’t she. Mrs Peel I mean. Not Babs. Though I am sure Babs must have been too.

There’s a great thread to be had here on pubescent and pre-pubescent crushes.
I remember being rather enthusiastic about some of the Bond babes.
Elizabeth Montgomery (Samantha in Bewitched). I love a girl who can wiggle her nose.
Emma Peel has remained an enduring crush for me…
Raquel Welch, specifically in Fantastic Voyage. Probably my first proper crush.
Bloody “Mr Peel”, of course,, turned out to be James Bond – and then look what happened!
who’d a thunk it – Kojak turns out to be a drive-by assassin.
Caught her final episode earlier this week and nearly posted an almost identical comment. However lovely Tara King was, she was on a hiding to nothing following Diana Rigg – so wonderful, James Bond
actually married her.
I like it when they use a male stuntman in the fight scenes. One moment you’re seeing Diana Rigg form a Karate pose, the next you’ve got a back view of Giant Haystacks in a leather jumpsuit attacking some mad scientist’s bodyguards.
My missus looked like Emma Peel when we started courting – it was not apparent till she let her hair down and took off her glasses. Talk about a pleasant surprise on top of what seemed a pleasant woman to start with – sadly I am less John Steed and more Dr Edward Fitzgerald (Fitz).
Missing Emma Peel? Check out her daughter Rachel Stirling on “Detectorists”. Equally lovely don’t you think?

Nup!
Sexy posh you say? Don’t forget Glynis
SooLin? Mmmm
The only Babs for me
Diana Rigg – the first woman who made my loins tingle, when I was too young to know what tingling loins were all about.
Tingling Loins – TMFTL.
AAMOF, I remembered that final episode with the divine Mrs Peel. As a little boy I was mightily peeved that she had gone and for me, Tara King was not fit to fasten her bra straps. I could only remember two other episodes: the one where the tropics came to south east England, and the one about Little Storping being the murder capital of England. Wonderful stuff.
