Hi everyone. I’m sure this clarion call goes out a few times a year, but Mrs. Mickey and myself are downsizing, and one of the casualties will be my Mojo & Word covermount CDs. I have hundreds of the things, probably complete sets (though I can’t be bothered to check), but I think we’ve established in the past that there’s no “market” for them (for obvious reasons), so would anyone here want them, free to a good home? I’m in Essex, 10 minutes from the M25, prepared to drop off somewhere reasonably nearby, or is there anyone out there who’s prepared to come and collect? Cheers!

There is still one charity shop in my town (Watford, Herts) that takes CDs and DVDs. The Peace Hospice Pound Shop in Lower High street*. None of the others in town are interested at all.
*Not to be mistaken for the main Peace Hospice Shop at the top end of the high street by the pond.

When I had a huge clear out the local Oxfam wouldn’t take cover mount CDs with the rest of my junk. I had hundreds, and had to recycle what I could and ditch the discs.

Yes, that’s what I’ve semi-resigned myself to doing, but I thought I’d give this a try first… it feels like a waste, but now everyone has all the music they want for free anyway (or near enough) I guess more free music on shiny disks isn’t really as attractive as it used to be… still, will give it a few days before they get the last ride to the recycling centre…

The Mojo discs are rather better than the Word ones, IMHO. I keep my Mojo discs for the car.

And keep yer car too! Big piece in the paper that no new cars available in the Uk any more have cd players. The recorded music industry have complained.

Many late 60s Soul albums are available ‘for free’… many, many more are not.
Obscure Rock ‘n’ Roll? Good luck with that.
Another thing – just because something is readily available in 2024, what makes people so sure they’ll still be readily available in 2034?
If a major act – say, The Beatles, the most major act – suddenly pulled all their material away, what would people listen to? Don’t tell me they’d buy them all again for a fifth or sixth time!

Does Mojo do themed / curated discs? I’ve little interest in plain ‘best new releases’ compilations but some of the more creative releases are worth having.
deramdaze says
Increasingly so, I could never understand why there haven’t been more.
The latest Psych-themed Mojo CD will be as good as any compilation released this year.

Well, I really don’t need more CDs and got rid of a bunch of magazine comps when I moved recently, but I hate the idea of they getting chucked! If you find yourself heading into London at any point Metal Mickey…

Agree with that.
I also have a Mojo Blue Christmas CD that gets an annual airing to bring down the festive mood.
The Mojo King Crimson CD from 3-4 years ago is also excellent.

Stick ’em on eBay for 50p a pop plus postage. Price the postage so you make 50p on each sale. Say you sell 50 like that – that’s enough profit for a four pack of Guinness Zero and a decent Indian takeaway.
Mike_H says
50p plus postage (and jiffy bag) puts them at a little over two quid, plus cost of said jiffy bag or similar*, unless you were to ditch the jewel cases and send them sandwiched between two sheets of thin cardboard to make the package less than 0.5cm thick.**.
*Large Letter, less than 100g weight. £1.55 Second Class. Might just about manage two CDs in one package with minimal padding.
**Letter, less than 100g weight. 85p Second Class. Probably only one CD possible.
Either option, you’re looking at more than a quid a pop and those charity shops that do still sell them will probably only charge a quid.
If I was getting rid of my CDs (which I’m not) and no charity shops were interested I’d offer them free to a local hospital radio station before taking them down the tip.

The cover mount CDs stopped having jewel cases a while ago – most have been in thin cardboard sleeves for yonks. Bin the cases anyway if they do exist. Cheapo A5 envelopes from Staples at 10p per and one 85p stamp. 50p per disc, plus 95p post & packing; £1.45 a pop. Worth a try I’d say.
Or bundle them up and try selling job lots. Some are on eBay at £25 for a pile of 50.
Mike_H says
Job lot selling is certainly worth a try.
Saves the hassle of having to list them individually and stoopid queries as to what songs are on what disc.

I don’t think I have the whole collection The Word of mouth CDs, I will keep my eyes peeled while checking out on eBay as I am in a constant need of music (and, generally culture) on this flat island in sweden.
