Very much an eighties child who also very much finds 98% of modern music leaves me cold with its pro-tooled, digital-sheened, auto-tuned, millennial-whoopy cynical generic blandness.
Can anyone recommend any millennial acts/songs that would please a lover of eighties music? I tried Hot Chip (after reading they would fit the remit) and they left me cold. Any suggestions? Cheers!
Moose the Mooche says
No advice, just praise for the coinage “millennial whoopy”, which sounds like the name of a reporter on Brass Eye.
bixieface says
everything that is wrong with modern music…
bang em in bingham says
just fucking annoying…ugh
Uncle Wheaty says
Totally awful.
I am now woke to this!
Freddy Steady says
Can’t help you @bixieface I’m afraid…in the same boat . I tried Hot Chip too . Dull.
bixieface says
Ah, man, still mourning the loss of Ted Maul…
Moose the Mooche says
Whither Brian O’Hanra O’Hanrahan?
Uncle Wheaty says
I am still morning the loss of Ted Moult and his double glazing ads.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs5sL-e45eQ
Moose the Mooche says
Do Ye Ken Ted Moult? (now there’s an 80s sound we can really get behind)
Paul Wad says
This is probably the most 80s thing a I’ve heard since the, er, 80s.
bang em in bingham says
The music’/tune is alright, the lyrics at least have a story…the video is just silly…Did videos begin the road to ruin for a lot of music way back when?
Lemonhope says
‘Lover of eighties music’ is a broad definition, but I’ll have a go…
Lana Del Rey has a [very good] new album out and as that’s what I’ve had on repeat for the last week how about a track from it.
Lemonhope says
Jesca Hoop also has a [brilliant] new album out. She has an eighties feel throughout her albums [there’s a lot of Kate Bush in this track] but it also sounds ‘modern’ [whatever that means]. IMHO she is one of the best lyricists around right now and I love a writer who can write a song where the meaning isn’t obvious.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Wow, I’m like down with the (aged) kids I am. Lana definitely best album of 2019 so far with Jesca comfortably settling at No 2.
Lemonhope says
Lana will be in my top ten, for sure. Jesca may just make it to number 1.
The ladies are smashing it this year. Aldous Harding is another top 5 contender.
This is her video for ‘The Barrel’ which I’m putting in here because it’s got that bonkers 80’s vibe.
Lemonhope says
The 1975 wear their ’80’s influences proudly. I’m not the first to notice that this track owes a lot musically to ‘The Downtown Lights’ by The Blue Nile
RubyBlue says
Agree with The 1975. 80s kid here too and although I have no idea what these young people are going on about, they do have an 80s vibe.
See also Everything Everything and Metronomy (but not the latest album).
(I can’t get on with Hot Chip either.)
Oh I know! Cut Copy! They’ll do the trick.
Lemonhope says
Got another one for ya
Lemonhope says
Last one, for now.
Churches ‘Tether’ [I love the part around 2.50 when after a quiet bit it all goes bonkers.]
Moose the Mooche says
I think the first Chvrches album belongs on here. The other stuff of theirs I haven’t heard.
Arthur Cowslip says
I say give up! The eighties were a unique time in music (for good and for bad…..) and it’s very difficult to recapture that without just sounding kitsch.
Having said that, check out La Roux’s two albums. Both very good, and without being an 80s copyist she/they do seem to capture something of the sound and spirit of the time. Catchy pop songs with a synthy feel, slightly “crunchy” sounding and without the sheen of modern productions. The closest comparison I can think of is early Depeche Mode. Would fit seamlessly into a 1984 episode of TOTP.
Diddley Farquar says
The Horrors. They have something of the post punk synth sound about them, a la early Simple Minds.
Freddy Steady says
Good call on the Horrors ol’ Diddley. I myself have two of their platters.
Black Type says
Skying was/is outstanding.
Freddy Steady says
Moving Further Away…brill.
The Good Doctor says
Yep good shout – their last LP ‘V’ is outstanding too, essential listening. Brilliant live band too and frustratingly they don’t tour much, they tend to do festivals.
They’re not a retro band but there’s a tip of the hat to Numan and Scary Monsters-era Bowie on this one I guess if you want an 80s ‘in’ :
fentonsteve says
C Duncan’s album, Health, has that laid-back Prefab Sprout/Scritti Politti vibe.
Pale Waves sound like a mix of The Cure, The Cranberries, The Cocteau Twins and The Blue Nile.
Sink Ya Teeth are like a mash up of Donna Summer and A Certain Ratio.
I’d have said The 1975 but Lemonhope beat me to it.
I will think of other later and come back.
retropath2 says
The new Lloyd Cole is ever so 80s and not in a Lloyd Cole 80s jangle way either, chock full of analog synths and even , on track ‘Violins’ that electronic woom woom drum sound, just like Taylor Dayne.
bixieface says
So far..
Hurts – yes, this definitely has 80s feel
Lana Del Rey – nice, more of a 90s Massive Attack feel to me – good video
Jesca Hoop – can definitely hear KB vibes, especially in harmonies. another good video
The 1975 – great video and I love the song. never really checked them out before. this is exactly what i’m talking about – they actually play around with the arrangement rather than it being the same THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH (another modern pop trope). Had Killers/U2 feel to it too. Will check out the albums. “modernity had failed us” indeed.
Thanks for the recommendations so far – knew I could rely on you all. Will check them all out. Keep them coming!
Arthur Cowslip says
I’ll be especially interested to hear what you think of La Roux. I don’t think I’ve ever met a single person apart from me who likes them!!
Diddley Farquar says
First album her voice sounded a little too sharp for my liking, second album made after splitting with partner is much better. I really like it.
moseleymoles says
All of these ‘L’ ladies were on heavy rotation in our car when the kids were about 7/8.
Little Boots
La Roux
Ladyhawke
All made stellar debuts and found it virtually impossible to follow up (IMHO).
bixieface says
Like what I’m hearing of La Roux judging by first LP – there is a pop clarity to it that is appealing
moseleymoles says
moseleymoles says
A Kim Wilde vibe here.

moseleymoles says
Possibly more a Debbie Gibson.
bixieface says
sold on La Roux – love the first album. Great melodies.
Arthur Cowslip says
Yay. I’m glad I converted you. The first album is definitely more immediate.
I think I reviewed the second album on these pages…. Will look it up. I remember I was shocked it took five years to follow up the first album… Now another five years gone and still no sign of a third!
Arthur Cowslip says
Found it: https://theafterword.co.uk/la-roux-trouble-in-paradise-2014
Chrisf says
How about some Lo Moon – their self titled debut came out a year or so ago and very reminiscent of Talk Talk…..
fentonsteve says
This is a lovely album. And available on double vinyl for sensible money, if that’s your thing.
Tiggerlion says
I think Chromatics might fit the bill.
Black Walls
Lemonhope says
Shirley this fits the brief… utterly modern but with that 80’s feel.
Robyn ‘Missing You’
duco01 says
Did I ever tell you about that time when Mrs duco and I had the table next to Robyn and her mum at a restaurant in Stockholm’s old town? [Oh, shut up duco – Afterword moderators].
Pizon-bros says
Martin Kellerman had a description of Robyn’s inspiration in a fake interview that made me smile:
– Jag har lyssnat på Kate Bush, Leila K och the Knife och jag tänkte göra en album i deras stil, fast sämre…
Diddley Farquar says
Except it’s not in their style. At all (yes I know there’s that hook from Running Up That Hill used in Honey but that does not make it a KB style song).
Diddley Farquar says
Yes to Robyn also Christine and the Queens Girlfriend has Madonna /Jackson/Prince flavours. Then there’s Roisin Murphy, especially Overpowered album. So much modern music has these kind of roots. I guess I am some kind of 80s fan since I like all this stuff, actually I like it better because the less desirable elements are removed. It’s done with better taste and judgement that you can have with hindsight. Some 80s music is beyond the pale (like any era) but it was a period that embraced dance music, electronica and good times and those are all things worth getting inspiration from.
Arthur Cowslip says
Amen to that! I hated the eighties when I was in it but the best aspects of it now burn brighter and are ripe for cherrypicking.
Uncle Wheaty says
I can’t comment on any of the above but no one seems to do poptastic tunes like this anymore.
If they do count me in!
Wham Rap…dated but still relevant is some way.
bixieface says
Case to be made that this and “Young Guns” did as much as any song to bring rap to the UK mainstream in early eighties. Go For It!!
Moose the Mooche says
Well, it’s between this and Miker G and DJ Sven.
Arch Stanton says
How about some pure 80’s pop from Sheffield…
Arch Stanton says
or how about if the Carpenters had signed to Subpop records
or what would happen if Kate Bush made a Goth album. (Give it a couple of mins for the orchestra to go mental.)
or how about some eliminator era ZZtop…
The Good Doctor says
I’ve banged on about Friendly Fires before on this forum. Give these a spin – Huge George Michael/Wham vibe mixed with House Music and a bit of that sort of Scritti/Blue Nile/Prefab sophisticated 80s Pop -If you’re an 80s Pop kid and you don’t hear something you like here – well, we can’t be friends 😉

Milkybarnick says
Has anyone mentioned Public Service Broadcasting yet? Worth a try – not 80s sounding per se, but think they would appeal.
Gary says
They were my first thought too. But are they 80’s sounding? I hear a bit of Floyd in their music. (As well as William Shatner!) But I don’t think there’s ever been anyone quite like them. For my money, the most interesting band in rock right now. Their concert at the Proms was fantastic.
Milkybarnick says
The 80s bit was a sticking point for me too – sampling I suppose started in the 80s, so i was going to try to hang it on that!
The Proms concert is now, I think on Youtube; I started watching it, but was worn out from work and fell asleep (which I was most annoyed about afterwards).
Uncle Mick says
If you had penchant for `80s ska, maybe this fits the bill….
fentonsteve says
Some of the 80s old guard are giving these whippersnappers a run for their money. This is ‘Sugar and Spice’ from the recent (well, 10 years old) Madness album The Liberty of Norton Folgate, probably my favourite Nutty Boys song since Bed and Breakfast Man:
And this year’s album, Encore, by the Specials is great:
exilepj says
Well worth investigating the new My Life Story album ‘World Citizen’ … it even features Eighties sax icon Steve Norman on one track
Moose the Mooche says
Haven’t played that. Along with the completely unexpected return of The Supernaturals it seems to be 1997 again. Are Bentley Rhythm Ace still at it?
exilepj says
sure they are somewhere Moosey … the Rhythm method sometimes works
I recommend a listen, would be interested to know what you think
fentonsteve says
FB tells me they are playing a gig, too. In Norwich.
exilepj says
worth going to see them, I will be watching in London when Salad are supporting them taking me back to the first time at the 100 club
fentonsteve says
They always were great live, but I found the albums had diminishing returns.
Zanti Misfit says
I like this lot. Style Council vibe here.
