As my mum lives reasonably close to my office I usually pop in for a bacon sandwich once a week. Following the bacon sandwich and to accompany my cup of tea she usually asks me if I would like a bar of chocolate. They are stored in a Tupperware container and last week her selection included Fry’s Peppermint Cream bars. It is so long since I saw these that I had assumed there had stop making them.
I have to say it was a delight.
But the question is whatever happened to the Fry’s Five Centre bar?

I bought some Fry’s Peppermint Cream bars in Asda recently.
If I’m honest the memory was rather better than the reality, I find them far too sickly sweet these days.
Sounds similar to a Swedish chocolate bar called Makalös (meaning matchless/exceptional) that disappeared in the 90s. Four fillings: nougat, pineapple, marzipan/pistacchio and chocolate truffle…mmmm! The pineapple especially – they should do one with all pineapple filling (no they shouldn’t; I’m now a diabetic and my willpower is weak!)
The question is: whatever happened to Fry’s Five Boys?
Desperation
I haven’t had a peppermint cream in years. I feel an Amazon shopping spree coming on.
Spangles alert!
Head for the confectionery nostalgia shelter everyone!
Evidence of a misspent youth…
Arf! Great tv ad as well……
I think my dad and I kept the local sweetshop in business in those days what with all the Aztecs and Amazin’ Raisin Bars we bought.
Pacification
Anticipation…..
Iration….
No idea if they are still made, but a great discovery I made on my first trip to Germany many years ago was the mint Rolo. Never available in the UK as far I know. They were wonderful!
Aldi make a Rolo-like chocolate with a peanut-flavour caramel middle. Far too more is how to risk buying except for a special treat.
A similar great discovery of mine here in Kuwait – hazelnut Kit-Kats …. marvellous accompaniment to a good coffee !
Aldi also make a dark chocolate kinda rolo thing but it’s still very sweet.
You did als use to be able to get a dark chocolate peppermint cream which wasn’t half bad.
Weren’t they all dark chocolate..? Or was that just here darn sarf..?
Expectation
Rolos were milk chocolate, although I seem to recall them doing a dark chocolate “Special Edition” a few years back.
Fry’s Peppermint Cream is dark chocolate, isn’t it?
I’m not much of a sweet eater these days, except for the occasional bar of chocolate.
Do Marks & Sparks still make their own Walnut Whips? This is (or was) a case of the “cover” version being vastly superior to the original because the M&S one had a walnut in the middle as well as on top!
The very original Walnut Whips did have one in the middle, and one (or rather half) was added on the top later….then they dropped the one inside.
Did I read recently that the one on the top is going too..?
@Nigel wouldn’t it then be a Walnut surprise? As in surprised to find a walnut.
I have now checked….the walnut is going completely and it is now a Whip….!
I used to like them for the thick chocolate…never liked walnuts much anyway.
Sacrilege!
Dime Bars…not 100% certain, but I think we have IKEA to thank for bringing us this toothsome(=rotting) sweetmeat. Don’t remember them before that, anyway. And Harry Enfield.
Yup, it’s Swedish. Original spelling was “Dajm”, until they started to flog it abroad.
Acclamation
NZ Supermarkets now stock Fisherman’s Friends! I was trying to describe them to my daughter a few weeks ago and now she knows.
I preferred Victory Vs though.
I self-medicated with Fishermen’s Friends when I spent a couple of months coughing and wheezing recently. They were the only thing that helped. They flay your tongue though.
@mikethep a guy is in court on a charge of sexual assault and is asked to stand up and explain his defence.
He starts to speak but has a bit of a cough. The judge asks him if has tried sucking a Fisherman’s Friend. ‘Don’t you think I am in enough trouble already?’.
The ones with the blue and white stripes on the packet are like putting Strontium 90 in yer gob.
Realisation.
Thems the 5 boys. Now relabelled as
Dysuria, Pruritis, Expectancy, Amyotrophy, Realization: I’m diabetic!!!
(Me? I’m not, I prefer crisps.)
From the ‘Viz’ Bygones of Yesteryear calendar, a few years ago.
Anyone else remember Fry’s Crisp’n’Dry, the chocolate bar made with vegetable oil?
That was the one that didn’t leave a mark on the kitchen towel that was softer than wiping the floors with a puppy.
Wasn’t the puppy for wiping your arse with?
“I’ve always thought that cornflakes look a bit like people” – Edward Catflap, 1987.
It’s SPRY Crisp ‘n’ Dry, not Frys. Still available in all good supermarkets (and some rotten ones too).
Iceland stock it.
I’m mentioning that because I bet I’m the only Afterworder ever to have been in one, notwithstanding the patronage of Dame Kerry Katona.
No. I have often bought frozen peas there.
In KL you can get KitKats flavoured with green tea, and yes, they are green. Yummy.
Just be sure not to be tempted by any sweeties made with durian.
My local newsagent as a kid crammed all his chocolate bars on one tiny shelf in his shop. Unfortunately, this meant the Peppermint Aero would contaminate all the other bars next to it with it’s rancid mintiness, meaning you’d end up with Peppemint flavoured Mars Bars , Peppermint Kit Kats etc.
My dad always preferred Cadbury’s Bar Six to Kit Kat. In addition to Cadbury’s chocolate the fingers were horizontal.
Has anyone ever managed to suck the sherbet up thru’ the liquorice in a sherbet fountain?
I don’t come here to read this filth!
I do. What are you wearing?
A smile.
I remember doing that – but shortly after it gets all gloopy, you just devour the whole thing.
