I think Millie Jackson had one of there great soul voices and should have been much bigger than she was. Controversial song subjects probably put paid to that.
Here she is in splendid voice:

Well lets try again:
That lavatorial album sleeve didn’t do her any favours.
What was she thinking? Or possibly more likely, why wasn’t she thinking when the idea was suggested.
Some come here to sit and think…
Fabulous song that seems to have been missed by every one of the compilers of country soul CDs which were popular a few years ago.
Millie rules.
And not just from the throne.
A terrific talent.
I gather the ‘slack’ approach was a cold headed business decision to give her a USP at a time when getting noticed as a good ‘ soul’ singer was difficult.
Her version of ‘Hurt So Good’ is a firm fave of mine.
From what I recall she was marketed as a the X rated soul singer with lots of swearing and that, which would have her banned, notorious and attract a cult following. A few mistakes there – the cuss words profilerated into soul and R&B and rap so that it’s almost weird now if there aren’t any. Having said that – there was still a market for material that Private Godfrey’s sister would find rather near but then she was marketed as a smooth soul diva. Got fed up with that…and then “Back to the Sh*t”. A picture of her looking mean on the cover would have been fine for this concept. Her sitting on the toilet, roaring, while having a shit is – can’t put it any other way – the worst idea ever.
Storming.
Loving Arms is one of my favourite records – first heard by me on John Peel’s 40th Birthday show (still got the tape of it somewhere). Very emotive.
