Just the strings on Hunky Dory – great stuff. Think of the way they lift Fill Your Heart.
Here in Hull there’s a typically tatty building in tatty Queen’s Gardens named after him. There’s been talk recently of replacing it with something more dignified. It ought to be a spit’n’sawdust pub called The Queen Bitch.
Mick passed me his feedbacking gold Les Paul to Play during I Feel Free with the Spiders From Mars. This was at the Toby Jug in Tolworth in February 1972.
Apart from being a great guitarist/musician/songwriter who else could have could have looked as good throwing those shapes standing next to David Bowie in the Spider from Mars?
I really like Mick Ronson’s playing on Michael Chapman’s “Fully Qualified Survivor” album from 1970 – stuff like “Postcards of Scarborough”.
I think that playing on that album was one of Ronson’s first proper breaks in the music biz.
Yes Lunaman I was in the front row. The Toby Jug held about 100 people. They had two rows of chairs at the front and standing behind. I followed the band around South London clubs and colleges for the next six months. Kingston Poly was the best – I got to dance with Angie Bowie.
Seeing Mick and Dave performing Space Oddity on acoustic guitars at Manchester Free Trade Hall. It was before the release of Ziggy Stardust. Mesmerizing. I also have a flexidisc from the David Bowie fan club all about Mick’s first solo album. It includes a snippet of Love Me Tender. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg0Zv6shMXQ
That melodic lead guitar hook in “Starman”. Just perfect.
I like Def Leppard’s cover
If you like Leppard’s covers of Bowie material check out the Cybernauts (Elliott, Collen, Woodmansey, Boulder) live/studio albums
I always loved the solo on this one……

I haven’t washed my hands since…
Gawd bless yer Mick.
@artery that’s F*****g fantastic. I’ll have to presume you were in the crowd rather than on the stage unless you tell me otherwise.
