He was in KMD, who were a great Native Tongues/Daisy Age act before some pretty horrible things happened to them… a fairly extreme example of how the sunny optimism of early 90s hip hop turned very sour indeed.
The first thing I see when I pick up my iPad is DOOM cos he’s my screensaver. I just picked it up to check the news before I go to bed. I feel a little sick. I love the guy. Shit.
When I dived into rap music 5 years ago, DOOM quickly became a favourite. I was trawling through books and blogs, following links, looking at lists and listening to recommendations, and Madvillain and Operation: Doomsday came up loads, regularly topping lists of best underground rap records. They are both fantastic, and after listening to a couple more of his I decided that he’s clearly the best thing in hip hop so I would start collecting everything he’d done, including all that’s available on CD.
I soon found out that being a DOOM collector was not an easy task, and not a particularly cheap one either, as I had to look to American sellers for a few of them. There’s music under so many different names – KMD, King Geedorah, Nehruvian Doom, Viktor Vaughn, JJ Doom, Danger Doom, etc – collaborations with loads of different artists – Mos Def, Czarface, MF Grimm…the list goes on. There’s also countless mash up albums and unofficial remix albums knocking around on the internet.
But I eventually found them all and what a collection it is. DOOM used more ideas on one album than most artists would use in an entire career. For anybody thinking of exploring his catalogue, after Madvillain and Operation: Doomsday, I’d recommend KMD’s Mr. Hood, Viktor Vaughn’s Vaudeville Villain, JJ DOOM’s Keys To The Kuffs, MF DOOM’s Mmm…Food and King Geedorah’s Take Me To Your Leader. But there’s lots to like on any record he’s been involved with and even on his less enjoyable projects he’s never boring.
I went on to gather copies of all the other tracks he’s featured on, all the one-off collaborations, non-album tracks, etc. I managed to find 120 of them, which are all the ones I know about, but I have no doubt that there are many others I have yet to come across.
And then there’s the merch. I’ve got a couple of DOOM t-shirts (which look very fetching on slightly overweight, balding, middle aged, northern blokes) but a few months ago the excellent Rhymesayers label sent an email out advertising their latest ware and amongst all the fab CDs (they have the best hit rate of any label going, buy any album from them and chances are it will be ace) and t-shirts they had a new range of official DOOM masks. God I really, really wanted one and had they come out a few months earlier, when I bought a few CDs and a couple of t-shirts from them I might have added one to the order, but what with going through a divorce and tightening purse strings, I couldn’t really justify spending £50 or so on a mask that I’d never wear and would look thoroughly ridiculous in if I did. But I picked a cheap replica up on eBay this morning instead, to go on my shelf of interesting things…I don’t know why I said that, cos I don’t have a shelf of interesting things. I have all kinds of stuff scattered around all over the place. Okay, in my new house I shall have a shelf of interesting things, and my DOOM mask shall be pride of place.
RIP DOOM, and thanks for all the great music. Like your brother and your son, gone way too soon.
Thanks @paul-wad Just listened to Madvillain for the first time- bloody brilliant! I may set up a ‘recommended by Paul’ playlist on Spotify, keep them coming.
Bloody hell, he can’t have been that old!

Be careful what you wish for. People who ask me for recommendations tend to get a long list thrown at them!
We love you @paul-wad for posts like this. I wish I still had your energy and enthusiasm.
