I’m in Glasgow for a long w/e, principally to catch the NiteWorks showcase gig at the iconic Barrowlands tonight. Whilst the city is a wee bit smarter than the last time I was here, in probably the 90s, fewer wobbly men on street corners, the Barras seems astonishingly run down and sad, not that it was ever remotely spruce and sprightly. Anyhow, in the taxi up to the Finnieston for tea last night, we dipped into the southside to avoid the traffic, and I suddenly noticed a name I recalled, the Laurieston, a perennial name in the post of the great late James Bla(a)st.
Here’s a swally to ya, Big Man!

Yes. Sorely missed. He would have got stuck in to Uncle Wheaty’s Alan Parsons Project thread and I did wonder what he’d make of the Frank Zappa band’s forthcoming tour.
I too am in Glasgow for the John Martyn retrospective tomorrow night and have similarly spent the morning walking streets of the past – principally Govan.
It was never the best advert for Glasgow but I’m pleased to report the pavements remain covered in copious amounts of dug shite.
I too will be visiting and playing in a couple of Blast haunts this and tomorrow afternoon. (Give us a PM retro if you fancy a mini mingle in the Clutha or Scotia).
You shoud check out the BFI’s recent release of ‘That Sinking Feeling”.
An almost lost film directed by Bill Forsyth of Gregory’s Girl fame.
The film features lots of lost Glasgow scenery and an extra is a rather spiffing information flick from 1971 entitled Glasgow 1980.
This concerns the huge regeneration project and again features lots of now gone cityscapes.

(That re-release of That Sinking Feeling is great though – before that, the only version that was available to buy had the original voices dubbed into a more generic Scots accent as it was supposedly easier to understand!)
That Sinking Feeling is a proper little jewel of a fillum. Haven’t seen it in years but fond memories.
Nowt to do with Blast, but the Barrowlands is ace. Everything anything 02 isn’t. Couldn’t get into St Lukes before, so went to Van Winkle for a Po’Boy instead, and a post gig Ardbeg at St Lukes to make up for it.
