ratbiter commented on the post, ATM – the hand luggage challenge for weekend CD shopping in New York. 6 months, 3 weeks ago
If he’s coming this weekend, I hope he brought his wellies. There are very few record/cd shops left here. Those that still exist tend to be small and/or expensive. The biggest range of new stuff will […]

ratbiter commented on the post, Dylan's Rough and Rowdy Ways Euro Tour – anyone here been or going? 1 year, 6 months ago
I saw him on the American leg last year. It was excellent, probably the best show I’ve seen from him. His band were great, and he was really chatty (i.e. he spoke twice).

I’ve seen the two extremes. At an Elton John concert a couple of days ago, there were screens asking people to post their videos and photos on social media with the appropriate hashtags. But at a Bob Dylan […]

I can’t leave the house without a watch on, it just feels wrong.
I’ve got about 14 or 15, most of which mean something – an anniversary gift that my wife got me in Paris, an old Swiss mechanical watch that I […]

5 (Spotify through a Sonos speaker) and 10 (internet radio though an Amazon Echo hooked up to my stereo) mostly.
Very rarely, I will play vinyl. But I pay $10 a month for Spotify, which is less than the cost of […]

ratbiter commented on the post, Now don’t get testy with me but I’d like to know the stats on covid deaths as it relates to age. 3 years, 4 months ago
Around 1,750,000 people in the UK have (or had) COVID. Around 62,000 died.
That means that in the UK, COVID has a case fatality of rate of 3.5%. I was being generous by assuming that it was 1%.
I have no […]

It sounds like a small percentage, but it really isn’t.
UK’s population is around 66,000,000.
The Case Fatality Rate for covid varies wildly by country. But let’s say it’s 1% in the UK. And for herd immunity […]

ratbiter commented on the post, A question about the US election 3 years, 6 months ago
There’s no easy answer to this. All elections are organized on a state-by-state basis, even for the President. So everywhere is different.
Apparently in New York City,, there are approximately 4000 voters per […]

I challenge you to a duel on who loathes musicals more… the songs from most musicals bore me to tears, or cause me physical pain with their awfulness.
Unfortunately my teenage daughter has developed an […]

There is a bit of a crackdown on AirBNB in NYC at the moment:
I can understand the point if people are running illegal hotels, but if you are just renting out your apartment when you are out of town, I don’t […]

I tried, repeatedly, to get tickets for this with no luck. I see that the cheapest ticket for the next show is going for $1250 on Stubhub. Ticketmaster used a pre-authorization procedure that, in theory, weeded […]

Fantastic post.
I think it was released on VHS in the UK though. I remember watching it on video at my 11th birthday party, in 1988. My parents weren’t savvy enough to have got their hands on a dodgy copy, so […]

Where to start?
The usual answers are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum, Statue of Liberty and (depending on your tolerance for such things) the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
But a lot […]

Due to the geopolitics of the region (I wouldn’t rule out war in the next five years), Kosovo aren’t in Eurovision. But all the Kosovo Albanians will support Albania. And all the Kosovo Serbs will support Serbia. […]

It appears that I actually lived in the Sanjak of Novi Pazar.
I spent a couple of months in Mitrovica, Kosovo, which I today learned used to be part of the Sanjak.

The President is elected individually, and the slate of Commissioners is then voted on as a whole. Regardless, they are elected.
Contrast with the UK system, where not one cabinet minister is elected to the […]
