Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day (except for the occasional catch-up with the England-Zimbabwe game. Oops, another wicket’s just fallen)

He did that routine 275 times, in every episode of Cheers. That was a great TV show, particularly the run with Shelley Long. I remember catching by sheer chance the very first episode way back in 1983 and […]

Can’t imagine this happening at a King Crimson concert.

I’m of the same opinion as @Dai. What troubles me is that, time and again, we are told that remembering means such events ‘will never happen again’. Maybe not in Europe, perhaps. But for the rest of the world […]

A very welcome release on CD and all beautifully recorded. I missed the movie screening as the three local cinemas decided in their wisdom to show it on the same day (Sunday) and at the same time as each other – w […]

Manfred Mann has form here. Do Wah Diddy reminds me of his song Pretty Flamingo and the line: ‘When she walks she moves so fine, like a flamingo.’

There are some words that should never be used in a song’s lyrics as they are just so mundane. Sandwich is one of them, as in Eric Clapton’s ‘Sign Language’: ‘You speak to me in sign language / As I’m eating a […]

Old Man’s Blues. Why don’t they just ff fade away with dignity? They surely don’t need the money.

This is a rumour. Trump is reported by one news outlet that he told his inner circle Musk would be stepping back in ‘coming weeks’. As a news story that’s pretty flimsy. I hope it happens but will wait until the […]

Wikipedia says that ‘Bringing It All Back Home’ is considered ‘to have been instrumental in the birth of folk rock’. Which explains the release last week of a three-CD Cherry Red compilation called ‘Jingle Jangle […]

Thanks for the review. I wasn’t too taken with World Record when it first came out, and considered it by far the lesser of the first seven VDGG albums. However, the album’s remastering on the Charisma Years box […]

Good points. ‘Underground rock’ was always considered to be progressive (in a literal sense). I suspect it was only in the mid 1970s, at about the time of punk, that the phrase ‘prog rock’ came in to use as a te […]

I assume the Universal compilation you mention was ‘Journeys in Modern Jazz’, as I see there is indeed duplication of tracks. You have a good point. I suspect certain tracks are licensed in a way that makes the […]

When I hear that fuzz guitar on the original ‘He’s Gonna Step On You Again’ I can’t help but get my air guitar out. An awesome sound.

Yes, I agree. And Westbrook’s ‘Love and Understanding’, recorded in Sweden in 1974 and released by My Only Desire in 2020, is, I think, slightly better than the version recorded in the UK in 1975 under the title […]

The two Chapter Three albums are excellent, full of slightly offbeat jazz-rock and with great vocals by Mike Hugg. A track by the band is included on a new sampler from Cherry Red, called a ‘A New Awakening: A […]

As the Wikipedia page says, the Happy Mondays tackled ‘He’s Gonna Step On You Again’. It got to No. 5 in the UK charts and 57 in the US. The original is superior, though.
