The reason Echo and the Bunnymen aren’t as big as The Cure? Their name. They’re a better band.

A Girl Like You was one of the best songs of the 90s. The b-side, an acoustic version of If You Could Love Me, is gorgeous.

It’s always been a huge mystery why newsreaders/presenters get paid so much. They read an autocue. I’m not saying it doesn’t require some level of acuity, but anyone who’s done a media-related course could do it. […]

I don’t know if any of you have seen Cage’s performance in Rumblefish (Bingo aside), but it’s one of the worst acting performances in living memory: you can actually smell the interior decor of the LA acting class […]

Ha, that’s pretty much how it was. I seem to recall a lot of people leaving before the end….

I made the ‘this could be my first/last chance to see him’ mistake back in 1997. Still one of the worst gigs I’ve ever been to – I think he was singing in Swedish at one point.

Tried to book a ticket for Netherlands v Portugal at Leigh Sports Village, but none were available. I hope this means it’s sold out, as opposed to a glitch on UEFA’s labyrinthine website.

It’s worth pointing out that Drunk Again by Rab Noakes is a terrific song. He’s also done a fab acoustic version of The Blue Nile’s The Downtown Lights, which is on YouTube.

I saw a repeat of Eggheads that featured singer-songwriter Rab Noakes as one of the challengers. He’s hardly a household name, but when he announced his occupation as singer-songwriter, no-one even asked him a […]

Shout by Lulu is a strong contender for most irritating song of all time.

I must be in a grumbling mood today, but I also have very little time for songs that give up on lyrics and resort to sha-la-la or la-la-la. Yes, I know there are probably 756 classic songs that do that.
A […]

I’m sure someone will point out a glut of classics featuring brass, but I just can’t stand parpy trumpets in songs. I don’t mean the solo sophistication of someone like Chet Baker; I’m thinking more Wake Up Boo […]

Didn’t Cope end up in studying in Liverpool precisely because he did badly in his A-Levels? Or have I dreamt that up? I seem to recall him saying so in Head On (which is a great read, by the way).

Yes, I thought Noel was straining a lot. He was shouting more than singing.

I live in hope: I saw recent-ish footage on YouTube where Macca’s voice seemed a lot stronger. I suspect the crowd will do a lot of the heavy lifting.

I once attended a family do at a friend’s house; New Year’s Eve, if I recall correctly. I was absolutely horrified/grotesquely compelled when they played a family game – passed down through the generations – cal […]
